2year old in size EIGHT shoes!!??

Question:

Not off the charts, but … dd has always been about 98th percentile for head and, er, 10th for height and, um, under the 5th for weight (even if I feed her a BIG breakfast before the weigh-in). No wonder she didn’t sit til she was almost a year and still tips over and hits her head a lot. I wonder if her neck hurts by the end of the day? –Janet Triplets  (10/21/96) – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >Just found one Circe!!! >My son’s head has been solidly over 100% of the size since he was born. That’s for sure.  Still, I think it’s funny that most of my family is 5′ 10" or taller (I’m the short one) and so is Doug’s, yet this makes it look like Victoria will be shorter than both of us… who knows… I was supposed to be 6′ 2"… — Paige GO LEAFS!!! |   My mom told me the peds measured each of us at 2 and told her to multiply by |   3, that would be our adult height.  Sheesh.  I fell about 4 inches short ;) The usual formula is supposed to be to double a boy’s height at age 2, or a girl’s height at 18 months.  The problem is that these things are reasonably accurate *on average*, but not much help in predicting the height of an individual child.  If you take the average height of 10,000 two year old boys and double it, that will be reasonably close to the average height of those same boys 20 years from now.  But parents are interested in the height of their own children, not the average height of their kids and thousands of others. Most of us probably know somebody who was on the short side throughout childhood, then shot up like a weed in early puberty and ended up as one of the tallest kids in high school.  Or someone who was rather tall in childhood but stopped growing early, and was passed by their peers in adolescence.  Kids don’t always grow according to those smooth growth curves the docs love. It’s somewhat more accurate to look at the child’s biological parents, as well as aunts and uncles.  Even that isn’t completely accurate, but most children will end up somewhere in the same general height range as close family members of their parents’ generation.  (This is assuming the adults were reasonably well-nourished through their childhoods, and didn’t have any chronic diseases that affected their growth.) – Cindy Kandolf, mamma to Kenneth (5 years)   Bilingual Families Web Page:   http://www.nethelp.no/cindy/biling-fam.html

The Ped told me that on their second birthday you can measure them in inches and double that figure.  BUT that it is really only accurate for girls.  He said with boys, it just doesn’t work.  (They continue growing longer than we do.  So maybe that’s why.)  Anywhoooo….  My daughter worked out to 5′8". She was 34 inches at two years old. As for the feet, my kids’ feet always grow first.  And they have some big ones too.  My 3 yr old wears size 10s.  My seven year old wears 2 1/2.  (You know the sizes go up to 13 then start over at 1.)  I wear a 9 1/2 and am only 5′4".  So they come by big feet naturally.  I tend to think of them in the same terms as puppies.  Their paws (feet) start out really too big, but they grow into them.  With both kids, when I notice that shoes are getting tight, I know that a growth spurt is coming. And pretty soon everything else is too little too.  So maybe he is just going to be a tall, thin man when he’s grown.  That would explain why he wears smaller clothes and bigger shoes.  Gonna need a good foundation to support that height.  :-}  So I really wouldn’t worry about his feet too much. What would you be ‘worrying’ about?  What possible difference could it make?  How could it be a problem?  What could anyone do about it anyway?

The formula is to DOUBLE not tripple the child’s height.  It is double the boy’s height at age 2 and the girls at 18 mos.  In our family, this accurately predicted our son’s adult height almost exactly;  our daughter is about an inch and a half taller than the formula would predict — but she did get a burst of growth later than girls usually do.  [girls usually grow 2 inches after puberty -- our daughter grew 4]

Well, that surely can’t be the correct formula, anyway. I was 30 inches tall at age two, and I sure ain’t 90 inches tall now! And I expect my son will be about 36" at his 2 year checkup, but I’m sure he won’t end up being 9′ tall! What’s probably more realistic is to look at the growth charts for 2-18 year olds. The following site has them in both inches and centimeters: http://www.drpaula.com/topics/growth.html. If you take your child’s height at 2 and project it out across roughly the same percentile line, you can see where he or she will end up at 18. According to this, my son should be about 6′ tall or a bit more (he’s on the 90th percentile line), which is exactly what his ped predicted when he was about 6 months old. The only formula I know (from a parenting mag.) "works" ONLY if both Mom and Dad are in the "normal" height range (and Amy and CJ’s bio Dad don’t come close!).  It’s: GIRLS:  Take 6 inches off Dad’s height and split the difference between that and Mom’s height BOYS: Add 6 inches to Mom’s height and split the difference between that and Dad’s height. E.g. My dh = 6′ 2" (74 inches).  I am 5′ 7+" (67+ inches).  So we are both in the *normal* US range. So for our girl you do: 74 – 6 = 68 and split the diff. betn this and 67 ==> 67.5 inches (5′ 7 1/2"). For our boys:  67 + 6 = 73 and split the difference betn this and 74 ==> 73.5 inches (6′ 1 1/2"). Having said that, my dd is *very* petite and I’ll be stunned if she makes it beyond about 5′ 2".  And one of my boys is already 2 inches taller than his brother …. Okay, I’m having trouble here.  First, I don’t know what’s *normal* so that may be where my problem lies.  Following your formula (I just replaced your #’s with mine) I get My dh = 5′ 10" (70 inches).  I am 5′ 7" (67 inches).   So for Victoria I did: 70 – 6 = 64 and split the difference between this and 67 — do I get 65.5 or 68.5?   Or is Doug not *normal*? ROFL!  Guess I’m not the only one with a little giant.  My little man was into a size 7 shoe when he was 18 months old.  He was 34 inches at 20 months.  My sons daddy is 6ft2 and I am 5ft6 ( there are tall men on my side…6ft-6 1/2ft).   We are always fielding comments about how big he is. It’s actually kinda funny when we are out at a playground, and the parents of 2+ yr olds come to talk to him and he is still talking baby talk.  They dont understand and look at him like he is retarded (he’ll talk for us..not strangers) because they expect him to have the language skills of a much older child…since he is as large as one.  He weighs only about 27 pounds ….so he is long and lanky. Alot of people keep saying that to me and they will ask me if I am sure. Umm..Yeah he is my kid. Also most 2T stuff is still too big! The shorts he is wearing today are 18 months and the shirt 24 months. He went into a size 7 shoe at about 17 or 18 months and kind of stuck there up until about a week ago. But his DR keeps telling me that his weight is perfect and he is tall for his age yet his cousin who is only 3 months older and about 1/2 and inch taller and only 3 pounds heavier is in almost a 5T. My daughter, sweet little girl, was in a nine before she turned 2. She slightly taller than average but not too much. I’m only 5 ft 2 and her daddy is 5 ft 5 or so. I think in my family I have females who range from 4 ft to over 6 ft. Now our large footed children will probably end up tall, but that’s not too bad. From the time she was 1 year old till she was 2 her feet went up 6 sizes, that was alot of shoes, but in the past year, from 2 – 3 her feet only grew 2 sizes. I got so excited she "wore out" a pair of shoes for the first time at 2 1/2. So that was a less strain on our finances. Hopefully your son’s feet will slow down a bit too. Don’t worry about it. My daughter is in ballet and already needs a bigger pair of ballet slippers, not much I can do. Karla

You get 65.5 … if he’s normal, but they didn’t say what normal is … Instead of split the difference, you can think of it as take the 6 inches off and average that result with your height (or add together and divide by 2) — does that help? Well, most mommies are inveterate worriers, especially first-timers. That said, even if having big feet *was* something to worry about, there isn’t much one can do about it (unless Amy’s contemplating binding her son’s feet, which I doubt :->)! Well, my son is 22 months and he went to size 8 shoes about a month ago. His feet (and hands) *are* big, I suppose, but so are mine (my father used to say I had "good understanding" :->). And most kids his age I know are wearing at least size 5-6 shoes, not 4 or smaller. FWIW, I’m amazed your son can still wear 2Ts given his height and weight. Julian must be about 34" tall now and weigh around 30lbs., but he’s been in 3Ts (and even 4Ts) for months now! And, just for comparison’s sake, his ped guesses he’ll be roughly 6 feet tall. My kids feet are a little out of proportion with rest of the rest of their body (the are tiny petite children, the oldest is 5 and only weighs 30 lbs) but not that bad.  However, as a child I was like that.  My feet were the first thing that grew (when I hit puberty it was my chest and for the life of me I couldn’t figure out why everyone called me Dolly Parton since just a few months before they were making fun of my feet).  I had to grow into my feet.  They were so large that I was always falling over them.  I am only 5 feet tall (before kids I weighed 88 lbs….my weight now is irrelevent since I am pregnant again for the sixth time in 7 years) and ever since I was about 16 or 17 have worn a size 8 or 9 shoe.  No idea why.  I wouldn’t worry about your sons feet.  He will grow into them, it might just take awhile.  Meanwhile you and him might have to put up with Bigfoot jokes.
