7 week Baby is very colicky Help!!

Question:

Some people disagree with this and others swear by it . My niece was very colicky and my sister took her to a chiropractor as did many of the parents in my parenting group. I would definitely investigate it but in some ways what they say makes sense your baby was all balled up for nine months and still to this day does not know how to stretch out those little muscles. I would check with your doctor and see what she/he says. My niece went twice before her colic stopped and some parents only had to take there babies once others 4-5 times but after they all swore by it Just some food for thought Kerry-Lynn Mom2Noah&Aunti2Madison

Check this with your lactation consultant.  I seem to recall being told that breast feeding mothers should not drink certain teas and one of them was any tea containing chamomile.  It is long enough ago that I may well not be remembering accurately, but my mental twinge makes me feel I should at least mention this possible caution.  Good luck!  [And please let me know if I remembered erroneously!] – Aula

Response:

If you are breastfeeding, check your diet, it might be contributing.  We found that when I cut eggs out things improved noticeably.  I have also heard that eating items from the broccoli family is often a contributor. Our son seemed to appreciate being held along one’s forearm, such that he laid belly down on the arm with his face gently cradled by the adult’s hand and his butt against the elbow.  Magnets did *not* appear to do anything, although several of our friends swore by them. – Aula

My friend used to put there baby in his infant seat and set him on top of the washer.  Hope that helps. Tracy Mother of Madelyn (14 months) Always strive for your dreams and keep them alive.  Without dreams, who are we?

We often took a ride in the car (car seat was a good place to sleep and we were able to put him into his crib carefully once he was completely asleep) Also a hot water bottle sometimes comforts the tummy. We also held him looking outward with arm on the tummy giving it pressure to relieve the colic sometimes. None of this is easy, but do realize it won’t last forever.  Eventually their digestive system catches up and they do grow out of this. Dorothy

My heart goes out to you. You brought back memories. My first child was an unbelievably bad baby. She didn’t want to be one. This lasted for about 3 years, although the colick went away around 3-4 months of age. Try everything. You never know what will work and what won’t. I remember people talking about driving around the block all night so the baby would sleep. There are white noise macines to help some also. The swing worked for me and also some drops from the Ped. I think they were called donnatel. Talk to your Dr. and see if he has any ideas. My mom stayed with us and walked the floors at night with my daughter so I could get some sleep. Sometimes different things work at different times. Know this is not a sign of the future. I thought the same difficult daughter would be hell at puberty time. She’s an absolute joy. Good Luck. I think every baby is different, but there was only one thing (and we tried everything) that worked for me.  My husband and I would each grab an end of Kamryn’s infant carrier/car seat and swing her back and forth.  This motion really seemed to calm her down.  Even though it was tiring, it was worth the exercise.  We tried using the automatic swings, but she didn’t like them at all — appparently they didn’t swing high enough. Some babies are soothed by white noise — like the sound of a hair dryer, dishwasher, washing machine, etc.  Have you given that a try? I know how difficult it is with a colicky baby — it adds so much stress to your lives.  Just remember that an end is in sight (although it seems to last forever).  Kamryn was around 3 months when she finally got over her colicky spells.  She’s now 16 months and is a very sweet, happy little girl.  Good luck.  -Leila – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > My seven week old son is very colicy and fussy everyday especially around 6:30 > and around 10 at night.  He usually cries all night and go to sleep around 3 in > the morning.  I breastfeed him and give him the bottle.  When he is fussy he > will only drink the bottle.  I have tried giving myelicon drops, gripe water. > Some people have even suggestted giving him diluted 7-up. > What works?? Your post brings me back to when my son was around 7 weeks until around 12 weeks.  I spent many tearful nights holding him feeling helpless.  I seemed nothing I tried worked.  We tried the Mycelin drops, burping him, rocking him, etc. It seemed the ONLY thing that worked for us was to old him in the "football" position (face down on your forearm with his head in your palm) and vacuum. The noise and the vibration calmed him down.  Unfortunately we could only do this for so long as your arm gets tired quick.  We had the cleanest carpets around! I would get frustrated when people would tell me that he would be over it soon.   I felt they really had NO IDEA what we were going through.  As a new mother it was scarry and traumatic.  You are not alone…..it is normal…..and it does get better. Have faith, Lisa
