Question:
> What would you do?? > Patty
I would IMMEDIATLY turn that in to the Police or FBI or someone!
Response:
Patty – I hadn’t seen this email, but had heard about it on another newsgroup- Triangle.general (a NG in the Research Triangle Park area of North Carolina). I understand that the person who sent this is not the person in the email address and that the situation is under investigation by authorities. I think a poster to the NG also said that there had been an article in a local paper about this scam. I would ignore it for now. Check out Triangle.General. Post a question there about it–I’m sure someone will give you information. -Suzi – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >Here is mail I just received. Maybe I am nieve, Im extremely shocked! did this. Not only for the **content** of the letter but for what it must be doing to the person named. < I kind of have a problem with the FBI punishing someone for their words. First of all, the internet is global. This guy may own an island country where what he professes to do is legal. Secondly (aside from the slander and harrassment of the guy listed), I don’t think thoughts should be illegal ever. Suppose a guy says he’ll kill my boss for me, but if I don’t know his name, where he physically is, or how to get him the money he asks, has he really made a legitimate offer to join in a conspiracy? It’s funny, they have named a crime for people who aren’t good at killing people: attempted murder. If you ask me, those criminals should be locked up the longest because they’re not only malicious, they’re incompetent. This guy is incompetent at forming a child pornograhy ring, he should get more jail time than an actual pornographer. Levity is the dearth of gravity. Brevity is the height of clarity.

[ [ [Within 24 hours, I received a reply from AOL stating that the offender’s [account had been canceleed, and the e-mail forwarded to the proper [authorities. [ [It seems that many people were sent that disgusting e-mail. AOL was less than honest with you. That was a "freebie test-drive" account. In the email the jerk noted that it was going to disappear immediately after the msg was posted. AOL didn’t do anything to hurt the spammer, who can be back in business already with another freebie test-drive. There is a detective at NYPD looking into the matter, I talked to him yesterday morning. It does not appear that the guy whose name appears in the msg has anything to do with it — as in he was probably targetted for harrassment by whoever sent out the msg — so don’t flame him. The biggest hint of that is the use of an anonymous account, but the detailled posting of name, PHYSICAL address, etc.
Response:
does anyone know a good police email address? child porn is illegical in all states. however, this was probably a joke, and if it wasn’t I doubt that is the man’s correct name or address. MommaKat

I thought of that too. It seems the message was sent out to thousands of people. There was a news report up here in B.C. about that message and they said that the F.B.I. are investigating it. I would have to agree that it seems more likely it was someone trying to ‘harass’ an innocent person. Why on earth would someone send out that message to thousands of people all over in North America, be so careful as to ‘delete’ their return e-mail address for ‘protection’ but include a name and address in the letter? Unless, of course, they wanted to harass the individual named in the letter. I sincerely hope that they FBI are looking into this and catch whoever did this. Not only for the content of the letter but for what it must be doing to the person named. It is a terrible invasion of privacy for many people on many different levels. Just a reminder here, always be cynical and suspicious of things you read on the Net, just because it is in print doesn’t mean it is ‘true’ and there maybe something else going on.

If you ever get an email like this – check the headers at the bottome of the email and the Message ID will show you where the email came from that the account is canceled if it did truly originate from their service. Junk mail is a pain, but this is illegal. Also, if you post to newsgroups like you said you did, all it takes is one creep to scan the email addresses and put you on some list like this.

Response:
I am shocked at the content of the E-mail message re child pornography posted by Patty (perhaps I’m naive too, but I can’t stand to think of this sort of thing going on). I am in New Zealand so can’t do anything about it, but I surely hope one of you in the US will send a copy of this message along with this guy’s address on to the police. — Tricia Jennings
