You’re right Lisaviolet, that does sound terrible. Do you honestly think PD’s insults will be an effective way to educate this man to the facts of declawing? More than likely the only result would be another flame war. I don’t think that would be "worth a grin".  Are these declawing threads here for sport?  Better to direct him to your informative website and stand by your motto to "educate, not amputate." Gosh, all that testosterone, must be why he has to demonstrate it in having part of his cat’s feet amputated. Let’s face it, all that testosterone has to have an outlet – let’s show that darned cat who’s boss hereabouts – off with it’s claws – heck that’s a much more macho way to deal with it than by that wimpy, soppy *female* way of clipping the claws. I have been meaning to ask this for quite some time now: Are there any sites where this would be shown? Are there any sites with pictures (photos or drawings) showing just how much of the paw is removed? Many have said "if they only saw"… Is anyone really showing the real picture? Satu – And no, I hadn’t heard of this toe amputation before taking a peek in the cat groups. I, our vets and our legislation find declawing animal abuse (which can send you to prison). What I found was so horrifying I stayed just to read what people use as excuses.

those You think that doing whatever you can for and loving your animals, includes declawing them??!!! Give us all a break. If that were true, you would’ve spent the time to teach your cats to use a scratching post and teach your brats to handle their pets more respectfully. Not only have you proven bad caretaking of your animals, but terrible parenting. "Oh, it’s okay honey. You can pull the kitty around the house by it’s tail, ’cause I’ll just having it’s toes cut off." You just don’t get it, do you Russ – declawing is illegal or not done unless for medical reasons in many, many countries. It *is* seen as anim al abuse. In the UK – the British Veterinary Association views declawing as "unnecessary mutilation". To those of us who live in the *many* places where declawing isn’t performed , it IS abuse, unless it is carried out for medical reasons. Having it carried out for your personal laziness because you cannot be bothered to find out how to deal with a pet in a humane fashion is – to me and many others – abuse. Regards, helen S

Hmmm, talk about stupid and ignorant. You’re just like the kettle who called the pot black. You don’t think declawing is "harming" your cat??? Give me a break. Let me ask you a few things….first, are you aware of the technical details of onychetomy???….secondly, did you witness the first fews hours of your cat(s)’s recovery after the surgery?? Apparently not, because if you did, you wouldn’t be spouting a bunch of b.s. And if you did, then your idea of protecting and caring for your "pet" is disgusting. J.Coyer CVT P.S. After reading posts about people having to put their cats to sleep and seeing how these cat newsgroups respond, its really disappointing when we gets posts like this one. Response:

lots snipped again…. The point is that you did harm your cat. Deliberately amputating several phalanges, severing several ligaments and tendons for non-medical reasons does harm. It is painful, utterly unnecessary, and mutilating. You are conveniently deluding yourself to justify having done what you have. >I would NEVER in anyway harm an animal. If i >thought that declawing my cat would harm her in anyway i would never ever do >it.I protect my pets like i protect anyone i love.

I then fear for those you love – amputating cats’ toes for your convenience is not loving nor is it protection. >Do not judge me unless you know me.

We can only judge by people’s actions and it is entirely justifiable, reasonable, and logical to do so. What you state belies your actions, so what you say is meaningless. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->RUSS

Karen….I just printed out your post and will keep it on hand for the next time someone asks me about declawing.  It brought tears to my eyes.   I look at my three cats and I can’t imagine ever doing anything to harm them or make them unhappy.  They grace me with their beauty and trust me to care for them and caring does not involve amputating their toes!  Why is this so difficult for some to understand? At least if these people could admit that they were going against the nature of the cat, their arguments while never convincing, might be a little easier to swallow.  But noooooo….they accuse us of being wrong.    What this whole declawing issue amounts to is there are cat people and there are "cat" people and never the twain shall meet.  How often have you heard people say, "oh yeah, I have three or six or ten cats, but they are never allowed indoors."  These are pets?  Why bother? I left this board once before because of this issue.  It seems some things never change. Again, thank you for your informative and well written post!! Response:

Hate to but in here but this is one topic that really bugs me. When I was in high school I volunteered at a local Vet. clinic during the summers. It was so increadably sad to see beautiful, proud cats come in and get declawed. I think if owners had to see their cats before they are cleaned up and given pain meds they wouldn’t be so happy-go-lucky about declawing. The surgery it’s self is pretty routine. The anesthetic is actually the risky part acording to the Vet I worked for. Cats are very sensitive to being knocked out. Not very wise to subject your beloved cat to anything harmful unless it’s really necessary. You’d be shocked at the number of touch and go cases we had when cats went under, and this is at a very well run clinic with top notch Vets. Then, after the surgery was performed, the cats paws would be wrapped and the cats would be put in small cages so they couldn’t flail around to much and hurt themselves as they were waking up. The badages had to be changed frequently becasue of bleeding, but carefully as to not irritate the the injured areas. I usually got the fun job of cleaning up the bloody cages (that’s what you get for being at the bottom of the pecking order!:) . As the cats wake up, most of them flounder about and whimper pathetically. It’s so sad. They try to walk and it’s obvious they are in a great deal of pain. They’re off balanced from the anesthetic and becasue their feet hurt. The bandages just bug the hell out of most of them. They’re disoriented, scared, and lonely. Then comes the issue of infection. Cats by nature want to clean themselves. So, as soon as they wake up off come the badages and the licking/irritation process begins. Hopefully the owner of the cat  would agree to pay for pain medication (you’d be amazed at how many people don’t consider it necessary) and we could get the cat started on that to help them out. Otherwise, they got to suffer untill their owner came back to get them. And of course, the cats had to be cleaned up as best a possible. Owners don’t want to see bloddy animals. That might imply that something bad was done. Declawing is a very sad, barberic, and unecessary thing to do to an animal. We had two cats when my son was born a year and a half ago. Both of them were absolutely spoiled rotten, they were my babies before I had my baby. We lost our dear sweet Abbey cat, but I still have my Miss Kitty. She and my son have their tense moments, but that’s why I’m here! I moderate and no one gets hurt! Much better than having unnecessary, inhumane, and selfish sugery performed on my sweet kitty! RUSS, Hopefully you are also teaching your child that your cats are different from many, if not most,  other cats– for your child’s sake.  If you are not teaching your child to handle all cats gently or with respect for their potential, you might be inadvertantly increasing the chance of your child being injured by a cat that has not been amputated, or of being bitten by one that has.  Some cats cannot be handled a lot, or must be handled with consideration for individual characteristics.  If your child sees you continuing to play with a cat in a fashion that provokes the cat to undesired behavior, even if you consider this to be normal play, maybe the child will not understand that this is something s/he should not do.  You might declaw and defang your own, but you cannot "protect" your child in such a fashion from other animals. The abortion reference is useless. Good luck. lots snipped again…. The point is that you did harm your cat. Deliberately amputating several phalanges, severing several ligaments and tendons for non-medical reasons does harm. I then fear for those you love – amputating cats’ toes for your convenience is not loving nor is it protection. >Do not judge me unless you know me.

Good luck. And *this* kind of comment pisses me off more than anything cause it’s ignorant and bullheaded.

After reading posts about people having to put their cats to sleep and seeing how these cat newsgroups respond, its really disappointing when we gets posts like this one. No one on either side of this issue is going to convince the other to believe what they do by name calling… especially calling someone fat.. I mean , no offense, but how old are you? If you found out she was black, would you start tossing around the N word as well? Its the same thing. Just agree to disagree and grow up. Response:

lots snipped again….

Good luck.
