baby driving me crazy

Question:

During dd’s colicky times- I had many thoughts none of them of course I would have acted on…desperation makes you think weird things and just when you think things are not getting any better, your little one stops crying to give you a smile….then you get a renewed 4-5hour "second wind" to deal with the colic. I wouldn’t say troll…just "speaking her mind" to a group of women.. — Connie Proud mommy to Julianna Nicole aka "cutie pie"…12/10/99 http://pages.ivillage.com/pp/conniesbelly/babypage.html – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >my baby is driving me crazy and I mean it. Hi Eva! I hope you weren’t scared away from here… Only you can tell us if your post was a "stress burst" or something more permanent, and I am sure everyone here would agree that if it feels too much to handle, don’t be afraid to tell someone, anyone, and get both of you some temporary assistance from an outside source. That being said, now let’s assume that you wouldn’t really do anything unkind, but are looking for ideas, of which some very good ones have already been shared.. I know when ds was going through a colic-sort-of-phase it would drive me crazy, and I would hand dh the baby as soon as he walked in and just say "here"… Do you have any help with the baby, in or out of the house? I remember the first few months I thought it would be a treat to even get an outside job as a trash collector (lol), just as long as I could spend a few hours away from home and cry hearing distance! I used the Mylicon drops, and they work, if that’s the problem… does burping make her feel better (as far as you can tell?) I would give them a try, I know some people also use the (adult) GasX (1tsp) which is a better bargain if that’s important. You didn’t mention dd’s age, but if she is under about 9 or so months, I would Stop all solid foods for a few days, go back to just bottle or breast, and see if after 3 or 4 days if the problem has stopped. That way you will know if she’s not ready for solids, or if you need to go slower on introducing them. No rush, since I’m sure she isn’t enjoying all of this either. Finally, use a carrier or a sling. She may need comfort, or closeness, and she may get some rest in the process. Don’t do dishes, go for a walk with it. It might sound like the last thing you feel like doing, but you really will feel better if you start doing it every time you feel frazzled. It really helps let off the steam.. Kiss your dd for us all :) PGunn – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > my baby is driving me crazy and I mean it. I agree – eliminate one food, or a whole group, one at a time. Does the pediatrician have a partner in the office?  Maybe a second opinion…. And, a friend of mine…one of his sons was a screamer.  What helped for him (don’t laugh at my choice of words!) was folding the baby….actually bundling into a sort of fetal position, wrapping in a blanket, almost like a newborn, holding him, and humming gently.  I tried this once while babysitting for him, after he’d been yelling for almost a half hour.  It worked within minutes.  I guess some babies continue to need that feeling of being enclosed.  Musically, what worked for him was "My Favorite Things" (from "The Sound of Music", I think???). I’d take her to another doctor for a second opinion.   The burping may be from a food allergy, and it may be giving her gas pain as well.    Or it could be colic.    If you feel the need, just put her down and go in another room and give a primal scream.   Or can you get a family member to take her for the day so you could get a break? In some places, the front of the phone book has a number you can call….might be a county preventive services agency, which will either talk to you over the phone, or even send someone out (for free) to talk to you and teach you how to cope with this sort of stress.  It sounds like the mom who started this thread needs every resource she can find right about now. Response:

Yep I agree, to me this sounds like an allergic reaction, or at least sensitivity to some food.  I can understand your feelings, and I know when my kids were babies I got so tired sometimes and so stressed, that I felt like doing something terrible.  I was able to realise that I would never do it, but I did feel desperate.  I think if you have a friend or family member who would give you a break it would be a good idea, and then you need to go right back to the start with the solids, and introduce only one at a time to see what is causing this upset. Response:

I wouldn’t be so quick to say this is a troll.  My daugher had colic and did the same thing, cried all day long.  I had similar fantasies, except in mine she was left outside IN THE RAIN.  My doctor said these thoughts were not uncommon and as long as I didn’t act upon them (of course not!!)  they were harmless. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >my baby is driving me crazy and I mean it. sounds like she has colic (sp?) to me.  but i am no expert.  when my oldest daughter did this i had a hard time dealing with it also.  as long as there is nothing physically wrong with her, it will go away.  if it is colic, there are a thousand and one home remedies and tales of how to take care of it, some work for a night or two but none that i have ever heard of are an actual cure… is there anything time that she does feel calm?  my daughter could be as fussy as could be but as soon as i would put her in the car and drive down the street, she would be asleep.  I got into the habit of taking a 15 minute drive thru a mcdonalds drive thru for a coffee every night right at her bedtime. another thing you can try, if she is small enough, is to put her in a pumpkin seat and set it on the dryer while it is running, this has helped for some friends of mine.  as for the gas, i know there are some over the counter meds that you can use in babies, one that comes to mind is Mylacon (sp?).  I have also heard of people giving their baby a few ounces of a carbonated drink before bed time and making sure they get a good burp after drinking it.  My brothers baby just got over colic and he used to sit her on his knee and bounce her gently to sleep everynite.   I am sure everyone here has a few ideas to share with you.  Like I said, I am no expert, maybe there is one visiting the group tonite. Always remember there is one alternative, an emergency room, if you really think that there is something wrong, a mother’s instinct is always the best. Good luck and don’t give up, you will get thru it. Kimberly Kimberly

I am really inclined to say that she must be eating something that is causing her gas. I didn’t start my daughter on solids until she was 6 months old. I started cereal at 4 months and kept her on that until she started to want to eat more and more and that came at 6 mths. Check her diet and take out whatever it is that is causing her the gas.

cure… Colic is a lot like lupus.  Unfortunately.  It can be classified as many different things, all lumped into one nice, neat description/diagnosis; but yet there is no one cure-all.  And don’t we wish there was, on both counts. AJPDLA

Sounds like food reactions to me.  Again, we would need to know her age, what foods, what liquids, etc to offer any Really Concrete advice, so please post again.  However, as a starter, when my boys started solids, I was told to introduce one food at a time and then wait a few days.  The first item was rice cereal, and I think oats and barley are other good ones – Very Few babies react to these grains. Then add fruits one at a time and wait a few days after introducing each new food item.  If, after about 3 days, your baby is acting pretty normal (for her), then add something else.  With the burping, her system could be overloaded with trying to process too many new items at once, or she could have a lactose or wheat reaction.  I hope we can give you some help!!  (BTW-When I used to tend bar at a "foo-foo" restaurant, the walk-in freezer was an occasional stop for many employees. When the customers Really started to bug you, you could go into the freezer and scream at the top of your lungs – the customers could NOT hear you, you got a blast of cool air, and you could get right back out into the madness.) Hang in there – we’re here to help you!! – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > my baby is driving me crazy and I mean it. I don’t think it does…. What kind of solids do you have her on?  How old is she? It could be something in her diet that is causing the excessive gas.  There are drops out on the market (Mylicon) that are supposed to help reduce gassiness in babies — I’ve used it and it has helped. I can understand your frustration — I’ve got three kids and if the baby doesn’t nap and the other two are running around, I go nuts too! <G> I hope that helps! — Jackie M. how old is she? maybe her tummy isn’t ready for solids? as for putting her in a box…. we ALL feel that way some days and I hope you can find a willing Grandma or friend to watch her for a few hours so you can get a much needed break.  My first son was Mr. Colic (SCREAM SCREAM SCREAM!) and there was a delightful neighbor lady who would come over from time to time and rock him for 30 minutes so I could take a simple shower in peace.. boy I miss her! – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > my baby is driving me crazy and I mean it.
