Question:
Here is another ‘bad words from kids’ incident. My husband and brother were helping to fix my sister’s car. While they worked, my 3-yr-old nephew was in the driver’s seat pretending to drive. My husband noticed that he was chanting over and over to himself, so stopped to listen to what the little boy was saying. My nephew was chanting, "Come on, you asshole! Come on, you asshole!" (He picked up such charming language from my sister, who we know to be a less than patient driver.)
Response:
OK, my turn for a story. About a month ago we took both kids to the mall and had dinner there. The mall was packed, the kids were animals, and we were about to lose our minds. On the way home (about a 40 min drive) the oldest (5) gets really jazzed up. My husband tells me to pull the car over. So I pull over and he gets out. I am thinking he will hit him, but we don’t hit so I don’t know what he is doing. Owen watches him get out and starts to cry. My dh opens the door and says something to him (I don’t remember) and gets back in. Owen is still crying. When he finally calms down a few miles later he says "Daddy scared the hell out of me"!! This is the same child that while doing the ABC’s with my grandma, gets to the letter F and when she asks what comes after F he says U. I am reminded of a story told to me by a coworker about her interesting ride with a swearing toddler—-she and the little girl were riding in the back of the car with child’s dad and mom in front. The toddler broke out in a loud singsong of "F**ker, f**ker, f**ker, f**ker!!!" At first the embarassed parents tried to ignore it but as it got louder and more insistent, the mother turned around and loudly rebuked the child. Heh – and in turn, that reminded me of this story: We were driving the drive back from my mother’s, and when turning onto the freeway, found ourselves in the THIRD traffic jam in an hour. I turned to David and said, "Dave, I’m gonna say a bad word … awwww SHIT!" I looked over at him and he was looking at me, so I said "you can say one too, if you want." He looked out at the sea of cars in front of us, turned his palms upward and said in an exasperated tone "I don’t *fuckin’* believe it!" I cracked up totally – I’m not sure where he heard the phrase, but it was just the laugh needed, honestly. Kimberly Bobrow http://www.bobrow.net

Jewli, I don’t have the exact situation, but close. My 5 year old has discovered the joys of burping. Not just quiet normal burps, but the obnoxious forced ones. He does them anywhere-anytime. It drives me nuts. I tried not to make too big of a deal about them, but now doing it has become almost a habit. I don’t know if he even thinks before he does it. Today we were shopping and he lets one out in the store. I told him it was time to go. We had more to do, but he had to know that I was not taking "a boy that sounds like that in public". I stayed calm and did not raise my voice. At home when he does it is not that bad, but I don’t want to continue this behavior. If he does it while watching TV, it goes off and I tell him he can’t possibly hear the TV with that going on so I have to turn it off. Same as books and activities like that. He has been excused from the table, and other play situations. I try to tell him that it is bad manners. This means we have to be careful to nit do the same! If your child hears these words then he may see it as ok to say. We tell our son that when he is a "dad" he can use these words but they are not kid words. So far it has worked. Thank God because my husband has one rotten mouth!! Good Luck, Andrea

We’ve all but erased the word ‘bitch’ from the house, which our 4 year old picked up from a kid from school <sighs> by calmly, but surely EVERY time he says it setting a timer and having him say ‘bitch’ for two solid minutes. Takes the power out of the word, and it’s old by 8 seconds, let alone 2 minutes! First time it worked 3 weeks, next time a month, a month again after that, and I don’t think we’ve heard it now for more than that. We don’t let him do anything else until the 2 minutes are accomplished, but we’re calm throughout, and sit with him while he does it. One time he was REALLY mad, and used the word 3 times – he had to do 6 minutes – we took breaks in between. Good luck – it’s the kind of consequence that couldn’t hurt to try

Replying to my own post – I should also mention that we’ve told David that the words can be talked about, in private, when he wants. This usually shows up in the car when he asks if we can "talk about bad words?" For about 2 minutes he gets to ask if the same old words are ‘bad’ and then we’re done with it, in a stress-free way. For whatever reason he never uses anything but the bad word he learned at school. The ones he’s heard elsewhere he has complete control over. Go figure! Kimberly Bobrow http://www.bobrow.net

My 5-yr-old tries out vulgar language, too. I have told him that we don’t want to hear those words, that those words make people feel bad. If he continues to say them, I send him to his room, telling him that if he wants to talk that way he will have to go where the rest of us don’t have to listen. Pretty soon he gets tired of being by himself and stops. He still does it, though, and we’re still trying to break him of the habit. on your high horse pontificating, I have a couple of questions for you. If it is so bad for someone to write f**k, while using asterics to disquise the word, all because you deem it wrong because a child may ask his/her parents what it means, does that also make it wrong to describe your lack of sex and your husbands lack of an erection, all of course in the spirit of it being bad for the little eyes. Since you posted the above in a parenting ng, should you censor yourself and state your immaturity at doing it? Or, is it o.k. for you to do as you wish, but not the rest of us. And is it not also considered improper use of the net to continually repost the same thing over and over, as you do your diatribe on breeding. Trust me, any kid old enough to read who attends public school knows very well what f**k means. My 4-year-old brother knows what f**k means. Other 4-year-old kids in his daycare class use it. I was not implying that you didn’t attend to your child. What I was saying is that way too many parents today expect others to take responsibilty in raising their kids. I say it every time I go to a resturant or grocery store. In fact it makes my hair stand on end. Too many parents sit their casually eating their dinners at resturants while their kids terrorize the other customers and nearly tear the place down running up and down the isles, while mom and dad do nothing. These are the same kind of parents that would sue the establisment in a heartbeat *IF* little Johnny or Susie fell and broke their arms while running wildly unattended. At any rate you were the one complaining about language on and unmonitored newsgroup in which freedom of speech is part of our Amendment rights. You may not approve of the language and feel your child should not be subjected to it. I would suggest that you do not allow your child to sit there with you a read anything on any Usernet group as you will encounter this language on any group you subscribe to. It is in fact part of the human language, like it or not. Gwen

Possibly. Have any of you bad mouthed people thought > about the ages of some of the members?
Yes, I was here when I was 14 and a half (as several of you kindly pointed out) and already knew the connotation of many words used. Then, of course, I’d been hearing them since I was in 2nd grade and took the bus to school. That maybe there are kids reading > this stuff and they see some of the words you use? That maybe their parents > don’t appricaite being asked what f**k means?
Then the parents should have the common sense to teach their kid about bad words before they allow them out into the world, or that children should be supervised by their parents on the net. This is an unmoderated newsgroup. A responsible parent will either teach their kids about manners or will supervise their children when on the internet. ~Emily

on your high horse pontificating, I have a couple of questions for you. And if you think your child isn’t old enough to know what f**k means, WHAT THE HELL IS HE DOING ON THE INTERNET UNSUPERVISED?!?? Gwen

I do not try to let anyone else "raise" my child. Nor do I leave him alone unsupervised. Ever. I am always with him no matter what he is doing (except going to the bathroom of course) so I can make sure that he isn’t getting into any trouble.

Emily, As you stated, you heard on the bus. Most kids hear more than their parents even want to know about or think about by the time they are 7-8 years old these days. Many boys in that age group have such potty mouths it would curl your hair. Gwen

You get your point across marvelously. You should be a writer.:-) > Aand go figure, I am as bad as a sailor at home. <BG>)
Why MB, you sound like me. I am bad, bad bad. It is basically one of those very bad habits I picked as a rebellious teen and have never been able to break it. Lots of times I hate it, but as the Beatles wrote in a song "There is nothing that can be said that can’t be said". I’m probably worse than a sailor. > world and the parents need to keep an eye on their children.
Amen! Unfortunately many do not which is exactly why Hilary said "it takes a village to raise kids". Because some people use it as part of their language. I try not to online, unless I need to make a really big point. I > think it is rude and imature.
~Emily
