canning homemade babyfood….help!

Question:

Regular canning process won’t work! The only stuff that you can can (sorry..can can??) are very acidy foods like tomatoes or anything containing lots of vinegar, or sugary stuff like jam. Anything else requires a pressure-canner. More trouble than it’s worth, really! I’d say if you’re travelling and don’t have access to cooking facilities, bring along some of the dried baby cereal and soft fruits like bananas that you can mash up. Or maybe a restaurant would puree the cooked veg for you? It can’t be that much trouble!

I used mushroom jars to put my babyfood in the frezzer, I ould fill them up 3/4 of the way full to give it room. . . Kari In Him we are All Related And let us consider how we may Spur one another on toward Love and Good Deeds. Love Conquers All

MaryBeth; We simply scoured our neighbourhood for parents who use bottled baby food from the store, and asked them to save the bottles. We prepare the same way you do, and keep the stuff frozen in the baby food jars for up to 2 weeks (meat, chicken, veggies, fruits – you name it!) The only caveat I would seriously suggest is that you fill the jars only about 3/4 to 7/8 full. Most of the stuff you’ll freeze has a lot of water in it, and this leaves expansionroom for the ice and saves freezer cleanups from exploded bottles! Also you have to remember to yank them out of the freezer into the fridge the day before you want to use them, though in an emergency you can thaw them in the microwave 10 seconds at a time. Hello i am new to this newsgroup.  i have a 5 month old daughter and she has begun eating solids.  i am making them, which is really easy…just steam and put in food processor. my dilemma is this…..i freeze portions of food in ice cube trays and pop out what i need at nite and defrost.  my concern is with traveling.   our families are quite a distance from us and it is not reasonable to consider putting food in a cooler for such long periods of time.  i really don’t want to give her bottled food and i wondered if it were possible to can her food??  if so, where could i find small bottles, caps and rings???? any suggestions would be appreciated.  please don’t think i’m a radical who won’t feed her kid gerber.  i just feel that homemade tastes better and doesn’t have all the nutrients cooked out of it.  anyway, i only work 3 days a week and have the time to do this. thank you for any input. marybeth in atlanta

Hi! The Avent Bottle system (800 # 1-800-54-AVENT)  Makes a "Breatmilk Storage Container Set" that is *ideal* for storing baby foods.  I am not sure what has to be used to "can" baby foods, but this system is basically the four ounce "bottle" with a special silicone sealing disk and a regular screw on lid.  It makes an airtight seal, and we have used it both for breastmilk and baby food storage. The set is 12.00 and has 4 containers.  Hope this helps!
