CFV: misc.kids.breastfeeding

Question:

FIRST CALL FOR VOTES (of 2)               unmoderated group misc.kids.breastfeeding Newsgroups line: misc.kids.breastfeeding Information, support, and decisions re breastfeeding. Votes must be received by 23:59:59 UTC, 4 Jan 1996. This vote is being conducted by a neutral third party.  Questions about the proposed group should be directed to the proponent. RATIONALE: misc.kids.breastfeeding Misc.kids.breastfeeding will supersede the newsgroup alt.support.breastfeeding which was founded in March 1995.  While alt.support.breastfeeding is a useful source of support and information for many breastfeeding families, and individuals gathering information on the subject, many sites (perhaps most) do not carry it. It seems appropriate that a breastfeeding newsgroup be brought into the misc.kids.* hierarchy, where both experienced and new parents would be likely look for it, and where it would attract new readers and new parents. In addition, the heavy traffic on the Parent-l Extended Breastfeeding mailing list indicates a great interest in on-line breastfeeding discussion.  Parent-l was founded in late December 1994 to support mothers who choose to breastfeed for an extended period of time.  It has quickly grown to a high-traffic list (often more than 100 posts per day) and has since evolved to include all breastfeeding topics, largely because there are few readily accessible Internet resources concerning breastfeeding.  Many hundreds of people have joined, many for brief periods only, and the most common reason for leaving is the heavy traffic.  Many individuals are interested in discussing breastfeeding who cannot handle a high-traffic email list.  The interest in online breastfeeding discussion is also evident in that breastfeeding is a topic which is currently discussed extensively on misc.kids.pregnancy, despite the fact that that newsgroup is primarily for discussion of pregnancy. Making decisions and choices about breastfeeding, as well as the management and experience of the breastfeeding relationship, is a topic of significant concern and interest.  Although breastfeeding is discussed and has always been discussed on misc.kids, the success of the misc.kids.pregnancy group indicates that having a specific group for specific areas of parenthood can attract new readers and new participants to the misc.kids.* hierarchy. Many new parents may be discouraged by the volume of misc.kids, and be reluctant to post on a newsgroup which is concerned with all subjects, topics, and stages of parenthood.  Providing a specific newsgroup for individuals interested in breastfeeding would promote the dissemination of support, advice, and information, which is often difficult to find. CHARTER: misc.kids.breastfeeding Misc.kids.breastfeeding will be a forum for discussion of all aspects of breastfeeding, and for supporting mothers (and families) no matter the age of their babies or children or how long or short a time the mother and childare able to or wish to breastfeed.  Judgments about personal choices in respect to feeding, or criticism of families’ personal situations, are strongly discouraged.  The topics for discussion would include, but not be limited to, the following topics: * breastfeeding techniques and tips * breastfeeding problems and issues of all types, including physiological,  and emotional, social, and legal topics, concerns, and situations * breastfeeding experiences of all varieties, encompassing both positive   and negative aspects * deciding whether or not to breastfeed * deciding whether or not to continue breastfeeding * reasons to breastfeed and reasons not to breastfeed * dealing with fears and aversions to breastfeeding, whether on the part of   the mother or baby * breastfeeding and employment * breastfeeding during pregnancy * tandem breastfeeding * pumping: how-to, devices and techniques, milk storage, making the   decision of whether or not to pump, workplace concerns * human milk banks * scientific research about breastfeeding * supplemental feeding and supplemental feeding devices * weaning, including the introduction of solid food and bottles (if used) * extended breastfeeding * devices and equipment that may aid or hinder breastfeeding * breastfeeding in special situations: i.e. adoption, cleft palate, after   breast surgery, multiple births, premature births, impaired suck * breastfeeding and medication * breast health for the lactating mother * discussion of parenting and lifestyle choices that impact on the breastfeeding decision and the breastfeeding lifestyle: i.e. sleeping arrangements, employment arrangements, etc.  [NOTE: Such discussion should be strictly limited to the effect on breastfeeding.  General parenting discussions should continue to take place in misc.kids.] * cultural context of breastfeeding * family support or lack of support of breastfeeding * the partner’s role in and feelings about the breastfeeding relationship * breastfeeding and society Misc.kids.breastfeeding will cover the specialized topic of breastfeeding.  Misc.kids will remain the primary group for parenting discussion of children of all ages, and the other groups in the misc.kids.* hierarchy will continue to have their particular roles. Posters are encouraged to post breastfeeding discussion in misc.kids.breastfeeding, rather than in misc.kids.  Cross-posting is discouraged. No newsgroup can replace skilled professional advice.  Parents who are concerned about the health and nutrition of their babies are reminded that it is imperative that they obtain the IN-PERSON ADVICE of a knowledgeable medical practitioner.  (The baby’s health and even his/her life can depend on getting proper medical advice.)  This newsgroup can provide support, suggestions, and discussion, but it CANNOT provide medical advice. Commercial Postings: Commercial advertising will not be permitted, but posters will be free to recommend or criticize commercial products on a personal basis. Unwelcome Posts: Topics of discussion should be relevant to breastfeeding.  Criticism of families’ feeding choices, whether in respect to breastfeeding, bottle-feeding, introduction of solids, or weaning, is discouraged. The purpose of the forum is not to castigate parents for how they feed their children.  As with any misc.kids.* group, flames and posts of a prurient or spurious nature are unwelcome. END CHARTER. HOW TO VOTE: Send E-MAIL (posts to a newsgroup are not votes) to: Replying to this article should work, but check the address before you mail your vote.  Your mail message must contain one and only one of the following vote statements for each group:       I vote YES on misc.kids.breastfeeding       I vote NO on misc.kids.breastfeeding Names are required for this vote.  The counting software will extract your name from the mail message if your mailer is properly configured; if your mail software does not indicate your name, you must include the following statement:      Voter name:  Your name here You can also vote ABSTAIN or CANCEL.  These votes are not counted in the results, and CANCEL removes your name from the vote listing in the result. Vote counting is automated.  Failure to follow these directions may mean that your vote does not get counted.  If you do not receive an acknowledgment of your vote within three days contact the votetaker about the problem.  IT’S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE SURE YOUR VOTE IS REGISTERED CORRECTLY. If you wish to change your vote, simply vote again from the same account; duplicate votes are resolved in favor of the most recent vote. THIS IS NOT A SECRET VOTE.  Names, addresses, and votes will be published in a RESULTS article in the same newsgroups in which this CFV appears. The purpose of a Usenet vote is to determine if there is sufficient interest in the Usenet community to create a new newsgroup.  Soliciting votes from disinterested parties defeats this purpose.  Please do not distribute this CFV; direct people to the CFV in news.announce.newgroups.  Distributing pre-marked or edited copies of this CFV is prohibited, and votes from such sources will be removed from the final vote total. Standard Guidelines for voting apply.  One person, one vote.  Votes must be mailed directly from the voter to the votetaker.  Anonymous, forwarded or proxy votes are not valid.  Votes mailed by WWW servers are considered to be anonymous votes. DISTRIBUTION: In addition to the groups named in the Newsgroups: header, the first CFV and the eventual RESULT posts will be mailed to the mailing lists: Mailing list name: The Extended Breastfeeding List Mailing list name: Twins Mailing list name: Midwife Mailing list name: Home-Ed
