Question:

Thanks Brian, I needed that too. In my voracious reading of this ng  in the past few days I have noted that you are pretty incredible with you helpfulness on resources.  Do you know of any email newsgroup for support of non BP family members? Regina-      My son(11)  was recently diagnosed with BPD after also being misdiagnosed with ADHD.  His treatment with lithium and other meds, along with therapy, has made a world of difference. PLEASE get your son  a full psych evaluation asap.

Hello, I decided to write a few lines and see if there is someone here that could answer my questions. Have a son Jonathon who is 13, well will be in 3 weeks.  Anyway when he was in first grade he was diagnoised with ADHD.  By 2nd grade he compensated so well and learned how to handle himself he was taken off of Ritalin.  Jonathon has speech problems, LD about 1.5- 2 years behind age (doing better now because I homeschool), school stress (in a public school) and no longer is hyper.  For the past 2 years his hyperness has been gone.  My daughter who is 23 is manic depressive.  We talked and realized much of what she was like and is like is the same as Jonathon.   Here is what we got:  Jonathon sleeps for hours past 8 hours, if you let him.  He daydreams or is somewhat listless kinda like lethargic.  He makes comments way out of the way or inappropriately.  He will start laughing normally at things and then gets really silly with his laugh, almost in your face at times.  Sometimes he laughs for no apparent reason. At times he is really depressed, sensitive, and does not like to go outside and play much.  He plays on the computer, sega or nitendo.  He does like to draw. He does not play outside with people because he feels they dislike him.  This is not the case and he has been told this.  His problem is that he rarely goes out and when he does he doesn’t act much like a real child.  Slow at doing things, doesn’t play like the other kids on his bike.  Worry’s about harm to his bike.  When he is happy he gets totally silly and when he is sad it is more depression.   One instance which only happened once that I knew of is this:  For two weeks he layed down next to a heater all covered up. He said he was not depressed or upset or cold.  But he just layed there.  No playing, no nothing.  Like he was numb, no feelings whatsoever.  He would get up about 5-10 mins once or twice a day, act normal and then revert right back.  His half-brother arrived after the 2 weeks and he started to get over it.  A little more lifeless, but still you knew something was wrong.  This has not happened again and it has been almost a year.   I did ask him if he ever thought about suicide and he said yes.  This is the first I have heard or even thought of it being a possibility.   I do have the insurance number to call for a Psych.  and will be doing so, but I wondered what manic depression is in children.  I would like an info someone could give me. I have another son who is ADHD and on Ritalin.  Both are totally opposite in behavior. I have had parenting skills evaluated and I am not bragging, but do a good job at it. I also give support to other parents of  ADHD children. I know it is not anything I am doing to cause any mental probs and I know we have both manic and ADHD in the family history.  Another words, I’ve learned that not all things are parents fault.  Anyways, I just wondered if anyone here has any ideas.  I am not looking for a diagnosis from anyone, but would like some suggestions or feedback. Thanks, Regina
