Earlier thread: Xmas ideas for fun on a budget

Question:

I didn’t catch the beginning of this post but here’s a suggestion for those who want the kids to have fun, be creative and give gifts but not spend a fortune. We have a some friends who give us food-type gifts and we absolutely love them. One friend has three kids and she lets them all participate in a big cookie-making session, then wraps them nicely and gives them to friends. Another is an excellent cook and she gives us a pan of lasagna or some such in a big foil tray with ribbons on it. And a third friend actually found a recipe for homemade Kahlua which she made, put in a wine bottle, and designed her own label (her name is Linda so the liqueur was KAHLINDA) Hope this helps.

My neighbor does this every year and I LOVE IT!   I really look forward to getting a plate of cookies from her and her family!   L.C.

You could also make snowglobes for them.  I saw it in the parenting magazine I received this month (don’t remember the exact magazine though).  It’s really simple and you could personalize it according to who you were giving it to.  Just take a small jar and superglue/epoxy decorations inside the jar.  Fill it with water and add the white glitter.  Put the lid back on and glue/epoxy it shut.  I plan on making a couple of these for some small gifts for family this year.  I think it’s great and a wonderful way to make a personal gift. One year Mom had us all work together to make jars of jam and jellies. She had collected baby food jars from a friend for a year and we made about 6 different types giving each family a jar of each kind. (The 3rd foods, 6 oz size jars.) We also hand stamped our own lables, sealed the jars with wax and covered the babyfood jar lids with fabric scraps and tiny bows. It was a hit and a lot of people were upset when we didn’t do it the next year! With very little creativity and a little time you can build a tradition, save money and have some of that ellusive "quality time" with the kids. Liz By the way, jellys are very easy to make with store bought juice. We made apple mint and that was everyones fav!
