Question:
Ok here I go, Sears is Dr. William Sears, he belives in attachment parenting and I belive when people refer to Sears sleep methods they mean a family bed.
Response:
What does Ferber beleive and what does Sears beleive about babies sleeping through the night? I know from what I’ve read, I don’t like Ferber something about crying until the baby falls asleep. My baby is two months old and has never had to even cry, ( she did cry when she had colic, but not because I was trying to get her to sleep. As soon as she was on her new formula the crying deminished) when I would hear her squirm, I would get her up to feed her, there were nights I only got one hour sleep because she wanted to stay up to play. She now doesn’t cry, sometimes fusses a little but she knows I’ll get her, now she is starting to sleep 5 – 7 hours straight, at two months I think that’s pretty good.
Response:
First of all, two months old is too early too even worry about sleep training. The baby needs to be at least 5 or 6 months old before you can even think about the Ferber method, and nutritionally, until the baby weighs at least 15 pounds, still needs the middle of the night feedings. Wait until the baby is at least 7 or 8 months old & 15 pounds – if he’s not sleeping through the night yet, then I would investigate the various techniques, but right now he’s too young. Heidi

Hi, For some reason, many people I have talked to are a little confused about the Ferber method (even a pediatrician I once saw). Ferber does NOT recommend letting a baby cry until he/she falls asleep. As a matter of fact, he specifically recommends against it. His method involves putting the baby to sleep awake, and then leaving the room for 5 minutes. If the baby is crying after 5 minutes, go back in and gently reassure the baby without picking him/her up and then leave again for 10 minutes. Next time it’s 15 minutes. The process is gradual and even at the greatest extent, leaving the room is never more than 20-30 minutes (I can’t remember right now)- and thats after several days of building up to it. I can’t comment on Sears because I’m not familiar with him/her, however I have read Ferber and it is a wonder book full of great ideas that really work. At 16 months of age, my son was waking 2-4 times a night and sometimes getting up for the day at 2am to 4am. He just would not sleep, and we couldn’t figure out how to solve the problem. Even our pediatrician couldn’t figure it out and referred us to the sleep disorder clinic at Boston Children’s Hospital (which coincidentally is where Dr. Ferber works). The doctor there (not Dr. Ferber) gave us some ideas and things got 100% worse!! Then, we read Dr. Ferber’s book and we solved the problem on our own and now our son sleeps (most of the time) from 8:30 – 6:00 am which is so much better than before…..my husband and I have regained our sanity. I wouldn’t be worried about sleep at 2 months though. Most doctors say 3 months is when babies will start sleeping through the night….and sleeping through the night might be from 9-5. Don’t worry about it yet. -Treelo – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

I am not even wanting my baby to
sleep through the night, she enjoys her midnight snacks. I was just reading what people were saying about Ferber and I saw the name Sears and was just curious. I don’t even put my kids on a sleep schedule. (well my older ones go to bed at a certain time) If my baby is hungry, scared, etc. she will wake up, if she’s not she will sleep. She is getting to the point to sleep 5 to 7 hours a night but that’s all on her own, I didn’t train her to do it.
