First Words…sorta

Question:

At least your son was just throwing stuffed animals. Mine did that, among other things, with his food off of the high chair tray. Mac & cheese on the floor, wide eyes, a big grin, and an "uh-oh"! And it was the first thing he learned to say. And he said it all the time. Even if there was no apparent reason. Cute and annoying at the same time. Response:

When my daughter was 9 months old she pointed to our cat and said "kitty", then she turned around, pointed to the dogs and said "doggie".  They were both plain as day.  (So much for mama and dada.)  She is now 11 months and has about 9 words  She says UhOH-for anything dropped, daddy, kitty, doggie, get down (for up, too!), apple, yes, no, and ocassionally…very rarely…only when she’s really mad…she will say "mama".  I try not to take it personally!!!!! I think daddy started somewhere after doggie…can’t remember. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Sorry for piggybacking – the original has expired on my server. > > Then again… I wonder if there is anyone out there whose kid’s first > > word is neither Da-Da or Ma-Ma. > "Cat!" "Cat!" Which we didn’t realize really was what it was until she pointed *at* the cat! She was making a "m-mm" sound for about a week before she dropped it – and went straight to "d-d" & quickly to "da-da." Which she said to my husband, of course – as well as the tv, her toys & my father-in-law. (We realized later that sometimes this was "dat!" for "that" as in, "I want that," or *Get that,"). Are you sorry you asked by now…? (My mother swears my first word was a sentance; "Eat cookie.") Susan, SAH mommy to Anne Elizabeth "Wonder Baby" Rumain.

My 9-month-old is saying exactly that.  Also, she replaces the "b" with an "m" – you guessed it; she’s saying "ma ma ma ma" before "da da da da"!  Damn!  :) Of course, she’s just babbling at this point and has no idea it means anything to us.  But we’re working on her…. I suspected that. ;) Then again… I wonder if there is anyone out there whose kid’s first word is neither Da-Da or Ma-Ma. My kid, who’s 4 now, directed his first word at his first love… "Bah! Bah! Bah!"   It was a bus he was talking to. Seriously. snip Huh! Feeling jealous now…. Tilly is just short of 13 mo and talks away like mad – at last count over 20 words. Da-da came first, now we have a really clear Daddy. But will she say Mummy? No way. She knows half a dozen animals, and the name of the little boy her childminder looks after. But not Mummy. I thought maybe the "m" sound was hard (she doesn’t say any words with that sound in), but now you’ve just spoiled that theory! Anna

Anna, the "m" sound *is* supposed to be hard, from what I’ve heard. That’s why babies say "Da-Da" before "Ma-Ma". Actually, I don’t agree with this. I think its just spread around by a bunch of jealous moms! :) Da-Da…uh, I mean, Jeff Actually,

Congratulations!!  There is nothing as special as hearing those first words. Enjoy this time because before too long you won’t be able to keep her quiet. That’s great Jeff.  "Da-da" was my second child’s first word also.  I don’t think he knew what he was saying at the time – it was just sounds, but they quickly learn what it means by the delight from Daddy.  "Ma-ma" came soon after, and now, at 16 months, he also says "Sarah" – (comes out "Warah") – his nanny.  I can’t wait until he says "Jamie" – his brother’s name, but that, I think is going to be a harder one to work out for him.  If he’s like his brother with the "J" sound, it’ll come out "Damie", but we’ll know what he means! – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >I had my own great parenting moment last night! >I was watching my daughter (8 1/2 months old) while my wife was working. >I was getting ready to feed her and was holding her, when she started >mumbling out loud. I had my own great parenting moment last night! I was watching my daughter (8 1/2 months old) while my wife was working. I was getting ready to feed her and was holding her, when she started mumbling out loud. She’s not a vocal baby, so this surprised me. I was too busy with getting everything ready to pick up on it at first. But, then I realized she was saying "Da-Da! Da-Da!". I repeated it to her and she got a big smile on her face and continued saying that for about 5 minutes. Hey, it may not be the whole word "Daddy", but it works for me! Jeff Jeff

Response:

Well alright Da-Da!!!!  That brought a big smile to my face.  It seems like those first word moments have faded a bit now that I can’t shut my daughter up.  But, I am due with my second baby in August and you just reminded me of the excitement in those early discoveries.  Thanks and enjoy your little one!!
