You stop what you are doing, and take their heads in your hands. Make eye contact, and say, "can I have your attention, please". Works for me. Make your communication brief, and to the point. Check for transmission after the fact by having recipient interpret what you just said.

Quit threatening, follow through, be consistent, and make punishment something very memorable. Linda

If they were supposed to get some sort of treat, "Well, you did this & you know you shouldn’t, so no treat." Sometimes I sing whatever it is I want them to listen to. I always say please. Sometimes I have to repeat myself. If I am repeating myself because they just didn’t really "hear" me, I try to calmly repeat. If I have to repeat because they heard, but didn’t act, then my voice becomes more irritated, and I may give a warning regarding their lack of compliance. Mostly, though, in our ADD household, we repeat because we forget or the request didn’t fully register. Singing or making it rhyme helps the attention and the memory part. — -Kay- (It’s an ADD thing.
