GOOD parenting links

Question:

I can relate. I had a real bad childhood. I saw things a person should never see let alone a child. Given that, ever since I can remember I had been seeking self improvement so I could be a good parent. I found a good councelor to talk to in high school, no one listened to me in jr. high, and she helped me begin the process of healing. I baught many self help books, but you have to be careful here some are written by people who don’t know shit and some are life altering in a very positive way.     You are on the right path, awareness is the first step. Here are some good links, they support "attachment parenting" which is the natural instinctive way of parenting. And let me tell you ‘anything’ by Dr.bill and Martha Sears (books and internet info.) is the best! http://www.parentsoup.com/ http://www.parentsplace.com/

Keep in mind that abuse/etc., while we often hear that it gets "passed on", can also teach one what *not* to do when parenting.  This is certainly the case with myself.  Though my father wasn’t "abusive" per se, he was very demanding, intolerant and judgmental.  From that I’ve taken how I’m *not* going to treat my own child, and frankly, avoiding those things requires almost no work at all.  All I have to do is revile my own memories. I have a bunch of baby/parenting links on my family’s page – http://kohary.simplenet.com/kohary.htm.  Have at it, and good luck! My name is Jason and my girlfriend has a 2 yr old.  We are conisdering marriage (eventually).. but I am concerned about whether I’d be a good parent or not, and being *I* had a rocky childhood (to say the least) AND a HIGHLY  abusive step parent.. I’d really like to know and learn all I can before making a decision of whether to marry (and become a father) or not. The baby is great… and like I said, the questions are about me, not him.  I’d lke to know of any really good parenting and step-parenting websites that are available. Jason, I don’t have any real info for you on websites etc. However, I think, just the mere fact that you are asking those questions means you’re already a good step ahead at becoming a good parent. Being aware of the difficulties is the first step to solving them. Good luck to you! Monika
