Question:
<Snip> I faced the same situation and my daughter also did not sleep through the night, she would be up once or twice a night as well. Once you accept that you can’t make a baby sleep it helps. I got some quick naps while nursing. I would nurse her in our bed if I was tired and fortuately she would nurse for about 40 min to 1 hour. This was the only was to get much needed sleep! It was – fortunately only a phase. She now naps at least once a day but only gave up getting up twice nightly about a week ago. She’s now up only once and I sometimes get as much as 6 hours of sleep in a row! Now that I’m finished school for the summer she naps twice a day for a total of about 2 hours! Oh well, I wish I had as much energy as she does. Good luck! J. Shaw Carleton University

I concur with Greg…. My son also only slept a couple of hours during the day when he was a newborn, he’s just never needed alot of sleep. Even now, he is almost three and only needs a total of 10 hours in a 24 hour period of sleep…sometimes less…..he just learned to amuse himself (at newborn age) during the day….good luck….these ones are even more challenging. BTW, Adam did not sleep at night either, be happy you get your rest at night…. Cheers! Karen

Barry. . . This may be a phase. . . our oldest napped 3-4 hours TWICE a day, but our youngest only went down a 1/2 hour or so until he turned 6 months. We had to walk/carry/stroller/play/pay attention the rest of the time. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it. . . this is the most precious person you know, isn’t it? It’s hard, but it’ll pay off. Not to put you off at all, but a dear friend has a demanding/high needs child who simply DID NOT sleep during the day, and very little during the night. He was 3 years old before he started sleeping through the night. He never had daytime naps for more than a few minutes at a time. > He falls asleep at 10:30 pm after the last nursing without a problem. > Sleeps the night, up at 6:30 or 7 am to be fed; 45 minutes of this and > he’s back down again for two hours. Frankly, if he naps from 8 until 10 in the morning (after brekkie) that may be all he needs during the day. This may not be what you want to hear, but not all kids nap for 5 or 6 hours a day. Consider yourself VERY LUCKY that you get the 11-to-7 time for your own sleep. At 3 months, that’s pretty good. > Stroller rides used to knock him out, and the snugli works from time to time.
Ya, you do what you can! Good Luck with the Parenting thing. . . Greg Lubianetzky Father to Teri, 7 years and Tom, 8 months

Hello, Our son just won’t sleep during the day. He acts cranky, my wife nurses him and he’s down for 10 minutes or so. Then he wakes up crying with a wet diaper and won’t go back to sleep. I put him in a snugli and he’s asleep on my chest as I type this (5:00 pm). But my wife’s getting very tired and frustrated with carrying him around and playing with him all day long. She currently refuses to ignore his cries but maybe if we heard some opinions from some other parents she’d reconsider. He falls asleep at 10:30 pm after the last nursing without a problem. Sleeps the night, up at 6:30 or 7 am to be fed; 45 minutes of this and he’s back down again for two hours. And then he’s up all day until 10:30 that night. Stroller rides used to knock him out, and the snugli works from time to time. If you respond to the newsgroup, please send an email directly to me as well. I sincerely appreciate all replies. Barry
