Help – going from bottle to cup

Question:

If you’re giving the cup IN PLACE of the bottle, then the rebelliousness is not unexpected. Try giving it at other than meal times (or when you would normally give the bottle) and cut back on the amount in the bottle. Please make sure she is not getting too little fluid, though. We started both our kids on cups without "sippy" lids. A GREAT place to try the cup is in the bathtub. Spillage is no problem, they can even hold it themselves if they want. I think most pediatricians would tell you that it’s OK for a toddler to drink from a bottle (restricting bedtime and naptime bottles to water to prevent tooth decay). However, if you’re eager to switch your daughter over to a cup, I would suggest drinking from the same kind of cup you give her for a while, and letting her see that you have the same stuff in your cup that she has in hers. sorry but i just had to laugh about your question (no hard feelings). i think you do not need a special bottle but some patience and a good sense of humour. MILLIONS of people learnt how to drink properly. how can you imagine your child cannot learn it. if she wants to drink out of a bottle – fine. just make sure you brush her teeth properly afterwards (that sucking seems to be bad for that). don’t worry too much. nearly ALL children learn how to drink, eat, going to the toilet, speak and all the other things you worry about at this moment. i assure you – you will have forgotten about this problem in about a year. (i speak from experience). enjoy sigrid

I found that with my youngest, now almost three, that having someone else deal with the bottle issue was much easier. I asked the daycare provider to explain that her bottle, we whittled it down to one only, was no good anymore (we let the nipple get yuckie) and that she should throw it out.  She fussed a little but not as much as if I had done it I’m sure. She only asked for it when she went home with me and she cried a little – nothing a little cuddling couldn’t cure. Having her throw it out made it more final and *her* decision not Mummy’s (we tend to have bad ideas :-) ) Just thought I would add my opinion!

My sister solved this problem by getting rid of all the bottles in the house! Christopher accepted that the only way he could drink was from a glass or cup and that was that. It sounds too easy to me (our 7-mo.-old daughter won’t take a bottle, so we don’t have this problem), but you never know what kids will accept. Elena, mom to Dana (1/18/96)

Do you have any ideas for me on how to ease the transition for her?   I have been looking for a device that fits on the bottle where the nipple would be but is a plastic piece shaped like a sippy cup lid with a rubber insert (my friends have one so I know they exist!!).  The baby uses this at first with the rubber insert so she still sucks for the milk as usual; then as she gets used to the new shape, you remove the inner rubber part and just let her get used to the flow of milk with just the sippy top.  Then supposedly you can switch to the cup.  I have looked everywhere for this and cannot find it.  I don’t know who makes it – my friends use the Playtex nurser bottles and this top fits on those bottles for sure, if not all bottles.  Do any of you know the manufacturer of this product or a store chain where I might look? Thanks for any and all input!! Mary Kay Morrison
