Our moluccan coockatoo is not of the silent type of parrots, he is used to get a sqirt of water from his old home when beeing too loud, but that is`nt a strategy that I would recommend. Have you tried to distract her? We have found the best metod to get our cockatoos to shut up is too get them interested in something else, like a toy. Also, our two cocatoos screamed a lot more when they lived in our livingroom, they now have their own room. After moving in there it took some time for them to understand that screaming wouldent work for getting the attention they wanted. Think about if you give the attention without knowing, some times even yelling is a reward for the bird. I dont know if it is accepted as a good source by bird people, but I have found some good advice in the magazine Bird Talk. We live in an appartement so the problem is familiar, but we havent heard a complaint yet. If all goes wrong I hope you can move to somewere else instead of selling your bird. Me, my boyfriend and our birdiebuddies hope to get a house and a garden some day. Veronica. Norway.

Hello Larry, I have recently come into the problem of a loud bird…mind you, I haven’t got the bird yet, but live in an apartment complex and *really* do not want to get evicted.  So I have looked up *noiseproofing*. It is actually fairly cheap (and this is in Canada, where everything seems more expensive :) .  For a serious job, R-8 insulation called "Noise-Stop" comes in 170 sq ft bags for $28.50/bag.  For a cheaper job, styrofoam sheets, 4×8 ft, 2 inches thick, cost around $13 and does a fair job from what I’ve heard. I’m just doing one room located in the center of my apartment for "time-outs".  I am also prepared to move rather than give up the bird as it is a lifetime commitment (mitred conure).  However, if you own your own house I can see your problem.  Still you could consider insulating…if you can’t tear down walls, build a sort of frame, wall-by-a-wall sort of thing. Hope this helps a bit, Nikki (and coming soon…Fred!) >Well, after a whole year of having her, I finally got a complaint from a >neighbor about my umbrella. It’s bad. Hey Larry!     Welcome to the happly world of cockatoo parenting!!!  Luckily I live in a garage apartment and the landlady who lives next door is hard of hearing!  My umbrella ‘too, Ernie, is quite a screamer, but luckily he generally only does it in the evening….it’s that calling in the flock thing….but it is certainly ear-shattering.  The one thing you don’t want to do when your baby starts screaming is go give him some attention.. he will scream all the time if you do.  When Ernie gets too cranked up and its later in evening, I just cover him up and put him to bed.   Usually he will quiet right down then.  Don’t know what to do about daytime screaming…maybe offer the neighbor some ear plugs!  Good luck! –  Cathy Gessner (I wear shoes even!) in Wild, Wonderful West Virginia

Yes! I wish I could. She’s not a nice person, I’ll say that. Any other suggestions? What do others do when their cockatoos yell and they have to shut them up???? Larry N.

Well, after a whole year of having her, I finally got a complaint from a neighbor about my umbrella. It’s bad. She screams when bathing, screams when doing all sorts of things. All in fun, but it’s LOUD. Unless I solve this problem VERY quickly, I’ll have to get rid of her. AAAGGGGHHHHH. Help. Larry N.
