Homeschooling – getting started

Question:

> Not long ago someone listed some good homeschooling sites – could you please > re-send.  I’ve lost them. > Also – does anyone have any tips on getting started with homeschooling – our > oldest is 2 1/2  and I am a Stay at home mom and will be continuing that. > Thanks for any help.  Suzy

Check local school board regulations as to what to do to register with the District, when, and what you will have to do each year to meet their requirements.  If you are in the US there is a reasonable possibility that there is an active home schooler’s association in your area that would be a great resource.  It is good that you are starting your research early.  We did and it has made things so much easier.  Oh, and although DS turned 5 after the cut off date for school registration we have been informally homeschooling and he is doing great.  I think the informal [short amount of time daily] stuff we are doing now will help transition him into longer time spans as we near official start time next fall! -Aula

This is a good list of links of homeschool resources. http://www.jctproducts.com/HSInternetBrowser/Main082200.htm This is another small homeschool site. http://www.homeschoolhome.com/ Once you start searching and then looking at links from other pages. You will be amazed at how much homeschool info and curriculum is out there! Good luck with getting started. Deanna

We don’t homeschool, but would like to & use many of the sites for information for encouragement & further teaching.  Hope you enjoy, if they are new to you.  They are jump-off points to other sites also. www.britesparks.com www.smarterkids.com www.education.com www.gifteddevelopment.com   (info here on homeschooling also) www.members.aol.com/stretrat/homeschool/states.html www.childparenting.about.com/parenting/childparenting/mbody.htm  (lots of articles & search homeschooling on this site) http://familyeducation.com/home/     http://www.keepkidshealthy.com/growthcharts/     (this isn’t what you asked for, but here is a fun site for good measure)  Maybe this site will help &/or answer     others’ questions too. Have fun, Judy

Dear S. Rieber: I recommend two books: Homeschooling by Susan L. Bain, Andros Books and the The Academic Adventures of Laura Bridges by James P. Bridges, New Philosopher Press. The Bain book is an excellent approach to K-12 homeschooling. The Bridges book helps parents develop their own strategies for dovetailing homeschooling and public education.  Going at it that way prevents a "fortress-us against the world" attitude from developing as a result of reliance upon one approach to Preschool and K-12 education.
