how does this work?

Question:

Ok, I’ve been with the group for quite some time, but I have some questions about how the postings work. Sometimes the subjects say "RE:  ….." but the original letter is gone. Where is the original letter?  Sometimes the only way to figure out what the first person has said is to disect the second person’s answer. Is there a way to respond without losing the original letter?  Or should we just click on "reply to group" and keep the original letter at the bottom? Thanks in advance.  I hope my question makes sense:) Linda

Response:

It depends how you have your newsreader set up.  I see that you use Outlook as a reader.   I use Netscape.  There should be something in your "preferences" (which is listed under "edit" in netscape-could be different in outlook).  Under the preferences you should be able to change on how you want your messages set up.   I have the box in netscape set up to "automatically quote original messages when replying".  I imagine that outlook has a similar option. Another possible cause is that someone resurrected an old thread that many servers have dropped, or has been "timed-out" of your cache depending on your "preferences" setting on how long your system stores them.  Thus you only see the "Re: …" only. If you are curious about a msg go to www.dejanews.com and search for the topic, they are saved there indef. from what I can tell. > Sometimes the subjects say "RE:  ….." but the original letter is gone. > Where is the original letter?  Sometimes the only way to figure out what the > first person has said is to disect the second person’s answer. > Thanks in advance.  I hope my question makes sense:) > Linda

It’s also a usual practice to only quote the parts of the message you are responding to.  So unless you see the original, you do have to guess based on the person responding. Also, some threads may not have originated in the ng you are reading, rather someone thought the subject relevent and added this ng to their headers.   Kendra http://www.geocities.com/heartland/lane/6516 *See my Valentines Day page!* — "If a man speaks in a forest, and there isn’t a woman around to hear him: Is he still wrong?"

Messages can be lost for several reasons.  None of which you have much control over.  The two biggest reasons are: 1  The message was deleted.   But more likly it’s because… 2 The message was dropped by your News server. Your ISP will drop messages from the news server when it gets too old. >Is there a way to respond without losing the original letter?  Or should we >just click on "reply to group" and keep the original letter at the bottom? >Thanks in advance.  I hope my question makes sense:) >Linda

When messages are above a certain age (that can be a few days, one week, two weeks, or yet another value, depending on your news server and sometimes also the group), they get deleted by your news provider. If they didn’t do that, many groups (like this one) would within very little time have thousands and thousands of messages to wade through. That’s hardly useful for you, and for your news provider it means that he will have to keep enormous amounts of space for it. > Is there a way to respond without losing the original letter?  Or should we > just click on "reply to group" and keep the original letter at the bottom?

Well, in the first place, always keep at least those parts of the original letter that you are reacting to. But another way is: If you have World Wide Web, surf to many newsgroups, and you can use a search facility to search the messages that you want. For example, if you would see my message, and would be wondering how the message looked like that I reacted to, you could search for a message on the group alt.parenting.solutions with the text "how does this work?".
