That’s HERE in general, not in this post. > It’s clear that an Amstaff, or >any other type of pit bulls,
There are no "types" of "Pit Bulls". An APBT is an APBT and an AST is an AST and a SBT is a SBT, and a BT is a BT, etc. Do you also classify all herding dogs as "German Shepherds"? > is not the best choice for you (or for anyone >else, for that matter).
That remains to be seen. Obviously, dim-witted dog-bigots shouldn’t own them. > Also be prepared for a rude onslaught from the >redneck pit bull fanatics here.
I’m neither a redneck nor an APBT fan. Yes, I like the breed, no, I don’t own one. Rude onslaught, huh? And exactly how do you characterize someone who’s only posts say that such-and-such breed should be exterminated? > They’re easy to spot and weed out, >though.
Yeah? Weed THIS. > With rare exception, their postings are laced with profanity,
Where? >personal attacks
Um, well, not directly, only if you’re guilty of what I mention. > and childish insults.

Anstaffs are pit bulls. Don’t buy that crap about them being a diffferent breed-they just changed the name to make it *sound* like they’re not as bad. >1.how much extra insurance should you get (and should you) if >you own an amstaff and what does the extra insurance cost?
A fortune. An your premiums will skyrocket after you’re sued when your pit bull mauls someone. >2.can you teach these dogs to be non aggresive towards other >dogs?(say if I take my dog to a public off leash area, will this dog go >after other dogs if I socialize him early?
No. They were bred specifically to chase, attack, maim and/or kill other dogs. YOU will NEVER be able to take if off a leash in public. PLus, most communities are enacting laws requiring pits to be leashed and muzzled at all times when in public. Other places are banning them altogether. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

Listen closely to the advice you get here. It’s clear that an Amstaff, or any other type of pit bulls, is not the best choice for you (or for anyone else, for that matter). Also be prepared for a rude onslaught from the redneck pit bull fanatics here. They’re easy to spot and weed out, though. BRAVO to the fabulous post below! I get people asking me for APBTs that can be taken to dog parks or housed with other dogs reliably, and I have to tell them the same things. There is nothing wrong IMO with a dog-aggressive dog that is kept responsibly. The key is understanding the dog’s nature and working with it, not trying to change the dog, as you’ll set both of yourselves up for disappointment, failure, and in some cases… a lawsuit! <HTML>> ps:I want an amstaff because I think they are the neatest looking dogs I >have ever seen.
The reason so many pit bulls have found themselves in trouble in recent years is that too many people have purchased pit bull pups because they like the way they look. The definition of a purebred can be found in it’s character and not in it’s appearance (which, in a nutshell, should tell you everything you need to know about the value of the AKC). From what you said in your initial note I can assure you that an Am Staff is the wrong breed for you. For example, if you want a dog that will be non-aggressive around other dogs, why not start with a breed that is, by nature, non-aggressive around other dogs rather than with a pit dog with numerous generations of dog aggression behind it? (Answer: Because you ike the way the Staff looks.) Honestly, I’m sure you’d be a fine owner for the right breed of dog, but an Am Staff is not the right breed for you. I want to get an amstaff but there is a lot of questions I need answered. 1.how much extra insurance should you get (and should you) if you own an amstaff and what does the extra insurance cost? 2.can you teach these dogs to be non aggresive towards other dogs?(say if I take my dog to a public off leash area, will this dog go after other dogs if I socialize him early? 3.I know these dogs thrive on challenges,so do I have to spend lots and lots of time exercizing him? 4.I have had dogs before and I usually have an ocasional fierce wrestling match with my dogs(and they seem to love this),but with a amstaff terrier is this a bad thing to do because it will reinforce the fighting instincts in him and possibly make him aggresive towards humans? 5.How soon after getting an 8 week old puppy would I need to put up a fence so he can run around outside? How high should the fence be? well that is about all I have if you can answer any or all please mail me. ps:I want an amstaff because I think they are the neatest looking dogs I have ever seen.

I have owned several American Pit Bull Terriers and never had insurance. If you take care in choosing a dog and raise it properly, you shouldn’t need insurance. > 2.can you teach these dogs to be non aggresive towards other > dogs?(say if I take my dog to a public off leash area, will this dog go > after other dogs if I socialize him early?
Amstaffs are not as game as APBTs, so, yes, you should be able to get one/train one not to be dog-aggressive. > 3.I know these dogs thrive on challenges,so do I have to spend > lots and lots of time exercizing him?
Yes. Walking, jogging, good backyard, etc. > 4.I have had dogs before and I usually have an ocasional fierce > wrestling match with my dogs(and they seem to love this),but with a > amstaff terrier is this a bad thing to do because it will reinforce the > fighting instincts in him and possibly make him aggresive towards humans?
No. Amstaffs/APBTs are not naturally aggressive toward humans and know the difference btwn play and aggression. However, with any dog, it’s good to let the dog know the boundaries (i.e., biting is out). Also, your dog should stop on command when wrestling. I would wrestle and play tag all the time with Chako (An APBT) but if I said, "enough" he’d stop on a dime. > 5.How soon after getting an 8 week old puppy would I need to put > up a fence so he can run around outside? How high should the fence be?
I’d say as soon as possible. Puppies have lots of energy!
A good height for the fence is 6 feet. > well that is about all I have if you can answer any or all please > mail me. > ps:I want an amstaff because I think they are the neatest looking dogs I > have ever seen.
