Question:
Our school has a really dull way to handle food alergies. No matter what the allergy, the cook makes the child a seperate lunch of a cheese sandwhich, apple and milk (Hopefully, this isn’t a milk intolerant child.) It quickly became the parents responsibilty to sent the child to school with a home made lunch! In our school, though, with 150 kids and only one person in the kitchen, her point was that she just could not do for each child’s personal needs or preferances. consequently, the negative reinforcement for home made lunches! Some school boards in our area are considering banning peanut products from school lunches. I’m hoping there are some of you who have more info on this… perhaps some parents with allergic kids, some who agree with the ban and those who don’t. I am not insensitive to the potentially deadly aspects of this allergy. But so far, from what I’ve found out, I believe the allergic students should be allowed eating areas that are free of peanut products. I don’t think it’s fair to several hundred school kids to have bans imposed for one or two allergic kids. What happens if a chikd is allergic to seafood, do you then ban tuna from the lunchrooms? There are children who have anaphylactic reactions fo seafood, as well as to bee stings… how do you outlaw bees in the schooyard. Happy parenting!
