What about those of us that are not AOL? Could you share some of the tips that they give? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Irene

Hi there, at the risk of sounding like a commercial, I thought I’d remind you all that I and about 25 other moms have started an e-mail list on this very topic, and for the same – lack of AOL – reason. I love those boards and read them a lot, but most of my "friends" are over here on "the big ng’s" so I started hunting for some interest in these parenting boards. That was about 2 weeks ago, now we are growing daily, exchanging e-mail, and looking very hard for a home!!! (We even considered the now-empty alt.ducksQuackquack!!, but we don’t all get it). If you want to join us, you are more than welcome, (as is everyone else), maybe we will find a place to meet that’s more convenient!! By the way, we are calling ourselves S.H.E., an acronym coined by the 2 sisters who write books and give seminars all over the country on the subject of getting streamlined and organized. (SHE stands for Sidetracked Home Executives) They call themselves the Slob Sisters, but don’t misunderstand, you don’t have to be a "couch lounging dog" for their advice to apply! For one thing, half the attraction to these women is their sense of humor, they are very, very funny! The other thing is that many of us "look" organized, but like you, find ourselves a bit overwhelmed by the constant need to keep on top of things (especially when we can think of so many more fun things to do!!) Anyway, if you or anyone else is interested, come join our Charter group for SHE!!!! DeAnna

I have a neighbor who is a stay at home dad. He has 3 boys, 8,6,3, plus he watches my son 3 days, and has cousins over 2 times a week to play. He has the cleanest house I have ever seen. Each child has one big toy in their room plus books. The basement is the only other place where toys are, it is the kid area. The kids take shoes off before going inside to reduce dirt traffic(we live across from a sandy park). One thing I have noticed. They are minimalist. They dont buy stuff they dont need, they toss anything that has not been used in 6 months. Every purchase they make is carefully analyized. "Do they really need it? Where will they put it? How much use will they get out of it? Is it something they can borrow rather than buy? etc" They are always looking for ways to simplify. Most of their bills are paid via direct from the bank acct. Their motto is "less time spent on daily stuff, more time for the kids" I have learned alot from these people(my bills are now paid directly also). They have only one car. This amazed me at first since they can obviously afford 2 cars. But just think how one car can simplify things….one oil change, one insurance payment, one wax and clean. The wife takes the bus to work most of the time, which allows the husband the car to run errands during the day. But sometimes she takes the car to work when she has to work later than the busses. No problem, he just does shopping another day. They utilize family and friends for support. The wife has 2 sisters each with 3 kids within a stones throw. Cousins come over and play while sister does cleaning, errands etc. Their kids go to cousins for the same. When he has to run to school to pick up a sick kid, he can call me to come over and watch the others. vise versa. They have a big calander the size of a desk blotter in the kitchen, this is the center for keeping track of who has to be where and when. Very important since there is not a day where atleast 2 kids have to be somewhere at the same time. With one car you would think this is a problem. They use the bikes alot. One takes the car, the other takes kids with the bikes. Or one hitches a ride with another parent going to the same activiy. I could go on and on…..bottom line these people really know how to simplify things without spending alot of time "getting organized". Now, if only I could. Patty

I loved this post. This is what I want to do, but haven’t been able to. I look around at all this STUFF and wish I could toss out half of it. However, it is hard with a family of 5, because everyone has their own stuff that they really feel they can’t live without. Now, back to the person who originally posted with, "How do I keep things clean and organized"; the key is to do a little bit every day. Have everyone help. I think I may have posted this here before, but we have a chore jar that everyone picks from every day with chores that take 1/2 hour or less. We also have daily chores; everyone helps. They can trade chores if they want. There are 3 "No chore" slips in the jar; they love it when they get one of those! Fun stuff comes after the chores are done, so there is incentive to get the chores done and get them done fast. The kids keep their rooms picked up every day so that they aren’t faced with an impossible task at the end of a week or two weeks of messiness. The living room is picked up at the end of every day. Keep baskets in corners where toys can be stowed. When the baskets get full, have the kids return their own toys to their rooms. The kids play with one thing (or maybe 2) at a time and clean up their current mess before they make a new one. I used to have to stay right on top of them to do this, but now they do it automatically. Have a family meeting and tell the kids and spouse you need ideas on how to keep the house clean and organized. They may have some you haven’t thought of. They may like to do the same jobs each day. We only started the chore jar because my kids grew tired of the same task every day. Just be sure to get everyone involved – you can’t do it by yourself! Good luck. — Mom to Matt, 9; Jacquie, 6; Sean, 4 Learning what comes naturally
