Tami: The Dusky Seaside Sparrow was native to much of the coastal regions of Central Florida. Tthe last known specimens were captured on the Kennedy Space Center and moved to Discovery Island at Disney World. The birds were all one sex and the biologist tried to mate the Dusky with another species of sparrow that was closely related. Tried in vain to save some of the genetic resevour of the duskies. Did not work. Man had a clear choice to make, quit space exploration or save the Dusky Seaside Sparrow. You know who won. When the decision was made, if individuals were removed from the wild and captively bred, the dusky would not be extinct. The choice was made to explore space. The billions of dollars spent in this effort since the beginning has been critical to the economy of this and many onther areas as well. Some would argue that the sparrow should have been saved and man should go elsewhere. Some could make that arguement about everywhere in the world. We should learn from our errors. We as individuals must realise that species survival will lose if it affects the well being of mankind every time. We as American tell other nations to halt their development and save their wilderness, but we do not set the same example. The rainforest is being burnt everyday, we cry and wail, stop don’t do this!! From the front of our bulldozers. Not very many of us, me inlcuded, have given up their car or planted gardensto grow our own food so land used for farming can be returned for wild creatures to inhabit. We still live in houses and use precious resources to maintain our way of life. When it is recongized that a species is in trouble immediate steps to start captive breeding programs must begin even if the traits for survival in the wild are lost. We can not afford to wait until the last court battle is decided before we begin efforts to save threatened or endangered birds. If we do, the faith of the Dusky Seaside Sparrow awaits them all. Sorry, I’ll get off the soap box now. Thanks for listening. Both wonderful little birds >humans managed to destroy. >Tami Underwood >Feathered Fantasies
Response:
KJ> KJ>A hybrid is a cross between two entirely DIFFERENT species (Hyacinth x KJ>Greenwing, for example). A pearl cockatiel crossed to a grey is simply a KJ>breeding between two cockatiels, same species, different colors. Does this mean an Eclectus is an Eclectus no matter what sub it is??? hmmmmm…are we talking Eclectus are mutations? please explain! Cherane, Certified Avian Specialist —
