Janet…we live in a tough world… but I fear that you may develope an ulcer before the rest of us!  :-) I, personally, don’t think that anyone could find out who I am through my computer and internet involvement.  I don’t even use a credit card to pay for my main account….if you want to get that detailed.  The main account isn’t even in my, or my husbands name. Nowhere have we used our last names, and only our phone number is listed in the phone book…that is,* if* you can find out our last name and what city we live in…. I sleep comfortably at night…you should do the same….don’t worry. take care Melissa

A number of years ago, I was posting messages on a forum in FidoNet (a messaging network of BBSes similar to NGs on the internet).  We were talking about how many of us had made friends over the years and how nice it was. One kid in the group was on probation for attempting to hire someone to kill the boyfriend of a girl he liked.  It was pretty much a joke since he tried to hire someone by paying them less than $10 and a bunch of Atari cartridges.  Nevertheless, it was taken very seriously and he was given 10 years adjudication (a form of probation). Part of his probation included limiting his time on computers.  The judge felt he had become anti-social since he never truly socialized; instead, he spent all of his time on computers. This kid jumped in whining about having his computer time limited and how the judge didn’t understand friendships over computers (no one liked this kid – he did not have friends over the computers).  I jumped back at him telling him to not whine to me since I figured he was lucky to not be in jail. He replied by threatening my life. Mind you, we all live in the same city.  My name, phone number, and address was published in the phone book.  Many of us met once a month for lunch.  He had the ability to find me. In his letter, he also said many rude things about the judge, as well as, bosted that he would break his probation and stay on the computer as long as he wanted, and the judge couldn’t really stop him. I sent his letter to his probations officer.  He spent several months in boot camp.   About this same time, I moved to my new house.  I decided at that time to not publish my new address.  I’ve never published it since.  The kid and I never became friends, but were able to co-exist on the message forum.  His threat turned out to be hot air. I’ll tell you… it scared me!  How do you REALLY know when one of these bozos is going to pop a cork and come after you?   Maybe it was foolish of me to use my real name on here.  I really didn’t plan on staying! ;-)  And I always used my real name on my BBS for the last 9 years – they have one of the phone numbers to my house.  Other than this kid, I never ran into any problems.  I used to receive 50-60 calls every day on my BBS from all over the world.  I spoke to many more people through message forums.  Only this 1 kid turned out to be a problem, and his threat turned out to be hot air. I think I’ll pick out a nice, new last name.  Yeah, anyone who really wanted to could track it back to my real name since I let it out.  But one of these days I’m sure I’ll change ISPs and get to start fresh with a new email address and all. I agree with Susan.  This is a great way for me to show pictures of Kelsey to my family and friends.  And definitely a lot cheaper than having to get reprints of pictures for everyone!!  Those perverts are everywhere.  You just have to watch how much personal info you put on your pages.  I love showing everyone the beautiful child I helped to create. I understand your caution – but I wish it wasn’t this way. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading about your triplets, and it would be nice to see photos of them and know their names. My youngest son’s birthday is also October 21st (although he is much older than your three). I write for magazines and have had not only my photo but photos of my children in various issues. The medium-sized town where we live is sometimes mentioned, as well. But so far there have been no problems. (On the other hand, this is Canada.) Teresa – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

It is too bad that this is a concern these days…and you’re right, it is.    BUT, there are definetely ways around it.  I DO use my daughter’s name and age (as well as mine and my husbands), but I have never included my last name, and my web page goes through a Free Internet Account where you don’t have to put ANY information pertaining to your home, your name, your address or number….because it is free, they don’t need this information for billing. You could put "Hillary Clinton" for all they care!! There is no connection to us and our web page and email address…the most someone could find out is Maybe what state we live in(I even state that info on my web site)…and there are quite a few Melissa’s, Dave’s, and Caitlyn’s here!! I think people just need to be careful about how much info they ALLOW to be put out there. Also, these free email and web sites are available everywhere…Yahoo, ivillage, metacrawler, snap, geocities, etc…. We don’t have to be the victims here…we just need to be careful.. I’m not trying to stir up controversy.  I genuinely want the answer to this. I have not created a web page because I don’t want perverts (etc.) looking at my kids (I don’t use their names on a site this big for similar reasons). Also, a friend started to get phone calls from a young man who had seen her site and wanted her daughters’ *shoes* as they grew out of them …  for his "collection" (she was so freaked she got an alarm system installed). Response:

Thank you for having the courage to ask that first.  I have been debating asking that same question.  There are too many perverts out there to risk putting your child’s face, name and information on the Internet.  I don’t mean to tell you what to do, but please be careful. Janet – it hasnt been until recently that I have thought about this in great depth!  I am more inclined to have my kids on the web to show them off (heehee boastful mom) and tend not to think about such perverts.  These guys exist everywhere – hey they could even see you when out and so on (I really dont think I need to go into details)  I have heard of thers that feel this way and I totally understand.  As for phone calls from people seeing my web page – I DONT PUT PERSONAL DETAILS ON!!! Being a mom is the most wonderful job on earth!  I have a 19 month old daughter who has changed my life in ways that I never imagined.  I love her so much and am so proud of her.  I created a web page just for her and would be so happy if you would visit it.  The address is www.oe-pages.com/FAMILY/Homepages/dsfitch.  If you do visit, please sign the guestbook and let me know what you think!  And, if you are interested in knowing how to do this yourself, reply to this message and I will tell you how.  It’s really easy (even for a computer illiterate like myself) and best of all – it’s free!
