although I know that this all started out as a troll issue, i just have to say what i feel. i am in no way ashamed to admit that i was on welfare for a while, because i became a single mother quite suddenly, didn’t have any education, and couldn’t possibly raise my son alone on $5.00 per hour. i was on welfare for a total of three years, long enough to go to college, get a good education, and now i have a well-paying job. now i am contributing back to the system that helped me out, which is the way it is supposed to work. what makes me angry is the people who say that they are better off not getting a job…mooching off of others is not better off. it is there to help people get out of a temporary rut…and the key here is TEMPORARY. whew….i feel better now! hope y’all don’t mind my venting for a moment! WIC is the federal give away and AFDC truly comes out of the fathers income !!! and have you checked out those programs of late you have to be on the floor and dying before you get them , plus there is a new government ruling that no matter how long you may fight for disability ( 99 % of all claim are denied ) you only get two year retro /or back two years. ( I fought for five years ) plus they don’t always go all the way back through your work history only about four to five years before you became disabled , then if you spouse works and has insurance you have to fight again to get claims paid due to Medicare and your spouses insuance cant decide who is primary thus claims do not get paid we are just over the wire and can not get any government or state help there limits or kinda like this you cant have a total combined income of more than 25,000 thousand a year!!! we make about 29 give or take with three boys and the two of us , which means do we get the chicken or a big box of cereal and eggs do the math . plus take a look at you news paper for a month and see just how many are going bankrupt not all do to bad money management.

hmmmm…….I was a social worker for DSS and I worked in the income maintenance department for several years…..AFDC is funded by the federal government. Parents (both fathers AND mothers can receive afdc) must give the name(s) of the absent parent, their social security #, etc. The absent parent is then made (in theory, anyway,) to pay child support. The person who posted the original post asked what they could do in order to ILLEGALLY gain afdc. When you receive afdc, you sign an application that is basically a statement saying all the information you have given is true. If you are receiving child support from a father(s), and you tell the worker that you don’t know where they are, or you don’t know who they are, OR that they pay nothing, you are committing welfare fraud. Welfare fraud carries with it jail time and penalties, plus you have to pay back any benefits you may have received. AFDC was not designed as a way of life. It was not designed for people to, and I think I quote here, "maximize your income". I have been out of the loop for 6 years, but I know that when I left social services there was a very big push to make afdc recipients begin planning for the future. In order to receive benefits, they had to take afdc sponsored training classes, look for employment, and be off of the system within two years. Within that two years their benefits could be suspended if they did not co-operate with the job/training program. In this state it was called Project Independence. The afdc parent was given reduced/free daycare, was kept on MA regardless of income for some period of time, and had a PI counselor for the first so many months of employment. They were then "weaned" off of afdc. I think that what most people here object to is what is called a welfare mentality. That is, welfare is an entitlement, that it is just an extra income source and it is ok to lie cheat or steal to get it. Welfare is a stopgap measure. Thats all. And in my experience, afdc is something akin to a bandaid placed on a gaping wound. Blessings, Tammy
