Newspaper & Magazine Ink and Infants

Question:

> How harmful is newspaper and magazine inks to infants? Is the ink harmful > even if the baby just touches the newspaper or magazine?

Another post here replied that there’s lead in inks. This is not true. Lead paints and inks were outlawed decades ago. Magazine and newspaper inks are now almost solely vegetable oil based. That’s why they now smear so easily. Some differ; if you’re worried, call the publishers and request the information, lest we panic about lead poisoning. Good Luck with the Parenting thing. . . Most newspapers use water-based inks that are not toxic. Magazines vary.

Most newspapers are printed with soy ink now, and there’s usually a box somewhere on the front of the paper to this effect.  Soy ink is relatively nontoxic. The ink used in magazines and some newspapers can be lead-based however, and lead can be very hazardous to young children, even in trace amounts. While just touching the magazine or newspaper from time to time might not cause long-term damage, it’s a good idea to try to keep printed material away from small kids, just to be on the safe side.   THe inks often contain high amounts of lead and other toxins, so it’s not wise to allow baby to chew on magazines and the like, but touching shouldn’t be harmful unless babies hands get really smeared with the stuff.                       Phan
