Question:
If I may add my two cents here: it seems to me that when I was younger, an aunt would have been the perfect person to introduce me to sexy lingerie. Aunts are traditionally not as close as mom, so you don’t have to live with her knowing she knows you want to be sexy, which at certain ages can be an uncomfortable thing for a girl. Yet they’re often close enough, and old enough (no offense Janet! I only meant as an adult compared to an adolescent/teen) that she can address those issues like mom would given the chance, and then leave and let the girl mull over things. And a camisole from my mom was perfect back when I was "budding," too small for a training bra, but too "big" to ignore. Seems to me wearing a camisole is a lot more modest than not wearing one, when your nipples are poking out of your blouse. –Nik

Problem is I’ve done books for so long I kinda thought a change would be nice <yawn>. As I was wallowing in blankness, I remembered an aunt of mine once bought me a white polyester slip when I was about 10 … it was the most gorgeous thing I’d ever owned and I fell straight in love. Then my mother put the iron thru it (accident, guys, honest) after the first time she washed it. What’s more, she never even offered to replace it. A bitter moment and I guess I was just trying to continue my "recovery" vicariously via my nieces. The camisole is, as Marie and Monica indicated, just a kind of cotton singlet for a sweet, flat-chested 9 yr old (in a pretty, utterly kid-friendly pink, without a hint of peekaboo lace, just "Gap Kids" in darker pink across the chest). So get a grip. OTOH, I will confess that the older sister’s bra and undies finally came from Victoria’s Secret. Satin. Bright turquoise and green. Underwired and lined. Hi-cut briefs. My daughters are a little older, 12 & 14 but they love SIMS. It’s for the computer and you design houses and have families living in them. It’s a virtual reality society. The starter SIMS is about $40 and you add to it with SIMS house party, livin large, etc. Another fun computer game is the Rollercoaster ones where you design your own amusement parks. Do your nieces have Playstation or Gameboy? The hot games for these are Spongebob and Monsters, Inc. At age 10, the Limited TOO is a popular store with the sparkly lotions and glitter shower/bath gels. Bath & Body Works also has nice lotions, bath/shower gels and glitter (the glitter looks like a roll on deodorant and the girls put it on their faces and arms). Claire’s in the malls are popular too with the jewelry, hair accessories, diaries, etc.

Diva Starz are very popular with 10yr old girls (my daughter’s getting two this year). They are definitely under forty dollars (closer to thirty). If you get each of your nieces one, they can play with them together. The dolls are supposed to recognize other Diva dolls and talk to them. They also interact with their accessories and recognize their clothes. I’ve seen them at most toy stores (got mine at walmart). Other ideas would be diaries and any kind of cute jewelry or hair accessories. Hope that helps, Pat

Girls of 10 go from Barbies to Boobies in no time, so they are out of the doll stage. They grow out of clothes, but books are their friends for life. Karen

My aunt asked me what she should get me for christmas and I said "panties." > and a camisole? Is she in training to be a junior slut or something?
Hmm, here a camisole is like the top part of a slip you wear under a dress, is it something different where you live? It’s not anything slutty at all, no one would even be seeing it. My, my. Such harsh words. "Underwear is fun to wear"! I think that was the Underoos slogan. My goddaughter is 9 and, although I think she’d be embarrassed about opening underwear in front of people, if it’s cool stuff she’ll like it. Gap Kids has some really cute/cool undies for kids. The term camisole can be misleading. For adults I think of silky negligee type things with lace. But, children’s camisoles are more of a cottony spaghetti strap type thing. For those girls whose breasts aren’t developed enough for a bra, but are embarrassed enough of their little bumps to wear something underneath. **Monica

Diaries. Diaries with key locks, beautiful pictures of things like unicorns on the outside and gel pens to write in them in. Preferably the metallic gel pens. -Aula
