Question:
Hi Jeff: I found this book that I think you would like about parenting. It’s called Life Teachings: Raising a Child by Jeanie Davis Pullen. She tells her life stories about raising her 2 daughters: what she did, how they reacted to it and how her kids are today. It’s a simple read full of great ideas and techniques. If you want more information about it, she has a website at http://www.LifeTeachings.com which has excerpts of the book and information about the offer. I was able to buy it at amazon.com. If you do decide to get it, let me know what you think. I don’t know about web sites for 17 month olds (because, while the Internet existed when mine were that age, it wasn’t the same animal it is now) but books I found to be a mixed bag. I liked the comforting tone of Penelope Leach’s Your Baby and Child, I loved the explicit diagrams for doing things. But I found a lot of her advice left me wondering if we were from the same planet, or if perhaps I had a different species of child than she was familiar with. Dr. Spock was good as a general reference for concrete things, although the 1988 or 89 edition still told you you should prepare your daughter for the onset of menses by buying her her own belted pads and sanitary belt !!!!! (Yeah, why not make her wash the laundry by beating it on a rock at the river side, while you’re at it…..) T.Berry Brazelton did not have much that was useful for me; although he clearly loves and appreciates babies, however his attitudes towards moms was way to condescending for me, and there wasn’t any information I found particularly useful. Burton White had some interesting theories from the laboratory, which I had serious doubts about whether they spoke to what really works in real homes. Also the attitude seemed to be; if you don’t do exactly as I say 1) you are an idiot and 2) your child is doomed. I have seen to many great kids whose parents have vastly different concepts of parenting to believe much of that. Many people on these ngs swear by Sears. I haven’t read them, but you could give them a go. I guess a lot depends on what your style of parenting IS; with a 17 month old you probably already have some ideas about what works for you, what kind of parent you are by nature, what problems you have that need to be addressed. Best wishes on your search! Enid
