Question:
Fair enough Sarah. I think I have pretty practiced hands now. Not being silly either. I only confirm my hand diagnosis, and I can tell if it is getting too high. This is after 15 years of parenting and 24 yrs of being an Aunt though. Annemarie

IMO there is absolutely no need for parents to take rectal temps. Temps can be taken with the smallest baby under the arm. If the temp persists, they should be taken to a doctor anyway. Leave rectal temps to the medical professionals. Annemarie

– I find nothing wrong with taking a rectal temp…..In fact when my son was young I couldn’t afford an ear thermometer…so I took his temp rectally…my daughters Dr. actually told me because her ear canals were so darn tiny to use the rectal thermometer…JMO….

Those ear thermometers that they use at the Doctor’s office are available at any medical supply store and are wonderfully accurate and only take a few seconds. (This is a device that you cannot be cheap about, though – the regular store bought ones are peices of crap). The armpit unfortunantly doesn’t give you the information you need accurately. In small babies (up to four months) a temp of 100.5 can be harmful and the armpit can have a degree and a half varient. In larger children, a temp of 104 or higher needs immediate medical attention. DS was very feverish at about four weeks old (prior to getting the ear thermometer) and the doctor on the phone directed me to take a rectal temperture to determine whether or not to take him to the ER. I think that is the only time where it would be necessary; IF your doctor directs you to do so. I agree with you. A baby that doesn’t feel good is normally crying and squirmy. It always made me nervous to take a temp rectally. So I did under the arm. I know you have to add to that, but it still tells if there is a fever or not. And there is no chance of harming the child with the thermometer under their arm. Even if you were trying to take it orally, you could harm them if they were really squirmy! Sharon

Hello, I got flamed at another health group for posting and here is how I responded. I understand how one could look at rectal temperature taking as a very simple procedure. However there are also many people who feel differently. Some people consider penetration of a Childs private part (anus & rectum included) with anything to be considered sexual abuse. Taking children’s rectal temperatures (in their bottoms) is one of the most hotly debated subjects in all childcare. Some people think it is distressing and harmful. Others that it is the safest and medically the most accurate. Some people remember it with pleasure, others with acceptance, and others still with horror. Does how it is done make a difference? Should older children take their own? Or is it only OK up to a certain age? Or is it always harmful? Does it matter if children cry or struggle, or do they have to learn to put up with it? So before you start flaming and name calling, I think you need to get your facts straight. http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/rectaltemperatureqanda All views positive or negative are welcome. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Hello Everyone, > Are you sick and tired like me of all the Rectal Temperature Smut out > there?
