Toilet training?

Question:

I put a few pictures of some of the other occupants of my house on my website.  You can see my pics at http://webpages.homestead.com/thomcat/Animals.html.  Kaare, your little Aurora will grow into a beauty like my Cleo. Response:

Toilet training isn’t a myth. Back in the late 70s, I trained my three cats to use the toilet. It took about 6 weeks and once they started using it, they never had an accident. You must always remember to leave the lid up and you do get paw prints on the seat, but it worked well for my cats. Teresa

Catherine, Wow!  I would have never guessed that Felix was sickly when he first adopted you!  He really was stunning.  :)  I just love tuxedo kitties and I definitely have a preference for long coats.  He is obviously dearly missed and my (late) condolences on his passing.  :( I would love to see more pictures of Cleo.  It occurred to me that the link I sent to Aurora’s page don’t really show off her coloring or her spots, but trust me, I think she’ll look like Cleo when she’s big.  At least I hope so!!! She’s got a greyish undertype coat right now that’s camouflaging her pretty beige coat and black spots.  I’ve been reading that by the time she’s a year old, the grey hairs will probably be gone and her pattern will be much more vibrant. Years ago, I remember reading an article about a man who trained his cat to use the toilet.  He also rigged the handle with a very springy contraption that his cat could swipe at to flush the toilet.  I thought it was a great idea (this was in the days before clumping cat litter), so I bought this thing called "Kitty Wiz."  To my amazement, my cats started to use the toilet; but they also continued to use the cat box, which they obviously preferred.  I never got rid of the litter box, so I don’t know if they would’ve continued using the toilet exclusively.  After a few weeks, they pretty much ignored the toilet and went back to using the litter box.  Maybe if I’d had more time to devote to this type of training, it would’ve worked better.  I also never figured out  how to make the handle contraption so that my cats could flush.  It is hysterical, though, to watch your cat jump up on the toilet and do his business! Catherine — In loving tribute to my best friend, Felix: http://webpages.homestead.com/thomcat/felix.html

Response:

It’s not in the urban myth category, but I still wouldn’t do it, personally. It sounds good, until you think of… having to always keep the bathroom door open (I don’t, ’cause they will tip over the wastebasket), cats can’t flush & so you would often walk into the bathroom to find an unflushed toilet (well, wouldn’t be so bad for the homeowner maybe, but when guests are in the house…).  And more importantly, what happens when the cat gets older & may not be able to maneuver itself up onto the toilet seat, & would have to learn to exclusively use the litter box again at an elderly age? Actually, with scoopable litters, the litter box isn’t much of a chore at all, IMO.  It’s a *whole* lot easier than the original non-clumping litters. It’s been done but I don’t recommend it. You cannot monitor your cat’s toilet habits to make sure there is nothing wrong (including inability to urinate caused by urinary tract blockage, a lifethreatening emergency in male cats); you are forcing your cat to squat and balance in an unnatural position; plus most cats can’t flush. Thank you for visiting my website.  Yes, Felix was a beautiful, sweet cat. I adopted him from the local animal shelter, along with Cleo (my other kitty), 15 years ago.  Felix was very sick, nearly starved to death, had large open sores, and considered unadoptable.  He struggled to open his eyes and look at me when I came into the shelter.  It was something in his eyes that told me that our lives and our souls were meant to intertwine. Everyone I know, family and friends, thought I had lost my mind when I adopted him.  But he turned out to be a very, very affectionate, special guy.  He would walk on a leash and he liked to ride in the car.  And, he was the only cat I’ve ever had that would get up and come to me *whenever* I called, even if he was napping.  We were truly bonded to each other.  It has been nearly six weeks since I had to put him to sleep, and I miss him terribly! I will try and put some pictures of Cleo up on my site later this afternoon. She is also a beautiful cat and has been a great comfort to me since we said goodbye to Felix.  Your Aurora looks very much like her.
