tv and children

Question:

I live on long Island, NY and without the cable we would not get any channels at all.  We went to the larger package $85 monthly becaues of all the video renting we were doing.  Now we get all the movie channels, we all have an assortment of what we like and we can tape them for our own video library. When our daughter was younger, we too watched much of the shows you are talking about but as she has gotten a little older her taste as all of ours changes. Lisa

Actually yes…….I did consider that option once. Quickly dismissed it though…….too afraid of missing the `one` "This Is Just a Test" that turns out not to be just a test. Wonderful points.  I’ve always found that kids will live up to your expectations of them. If you expect them to be lazy and not able to finsish simple tasks but simply run around and be wild, that’s what they do.  If you expect them to have a certain level of responsbility and behave in a respectable manner (within reason of course since kids need a time and place to be wild and silly as well) then that’s what they do. We expect that our children will follow tv rules, even with the tv in their bedrooms.  They do.

those evil abusers who has tv in the kids rooms.  They watch for 1 hr from 8-9 at night, and 1 hr on the weekends in the afternoon.  Its just nice for them to be able to watch quietly if there’s something they really want to see (and it sure beats the two of them arguing when son wants to watch discovery channel or animal planet, and daughter wants to watch figure skating or a show on dance). Well you have more channels then I have…I couldnt’ imagine even 100 channels… If I had that… I myself would never see day light!!! Either that or I would go crazy trying to decide what to watch! We have 1 disney, 1 cartoon network, 1 nick…and about 100 disney movies!! That is plenty!!

I find most tv boring and pointless, and my kids don’t watch much either, the elder two out of choice, and the younger one cos I limit her hours. I agree, putting a tv in a kid’s room is a dumb move. But I *can* imagine a lot more destructive things, outside overt violent abuse — telling them they’re stupid, not feeding them properly, not taking them to the doctor when they need it, not making sure they go to school, and on into the area of never reading to them, never showing them the stars, never telling them how great they are, never playing poker with them — the whole range of neglect, verbal abuse, and plain not caring. Compared to that, putting a tv in a kid’s room is just not on the scale … sorry, I just get tired of people being so eager to place others in the wrong … ‘my parenting is enlightened, your parenting is awful’. Sometimes other people’s parenting is just different. — Nora

Guess I’ll count my blessings that there is at least one thing in the San Francisco area that is cheaper than in other parts of the country. Certainly housing isn’t.

sounds right to me.  I am stunned by people who put TVs in their children’s rooms — it would be hard to imagine a more destructive thing to do as a parent other than overt violent abuse.

My parents never allowed me to watch TV at all during the school week (Sunday – Friday).  I could watch as much as I wanted during the weekend.  Though I resented it at the time, I now think it was one of the best things they did for me.  Without TV, I read voraciously, and I ended up deciding that I would do something similar with my own children.  We have a TV, and a collection of videos, but NO cable, satellite or dish.  I don’t have anything against them, but part of the reason I resented the no-TV during the week rule as a child, is that my father would park himself in front of the TV at night, and I wasn’t allowed in.  I did NOT appreciate the double standard.  So, I decided that if I wasn’t going to let my kids watch TV, then I myself wouldn’t watch TV either. The funny thing is that my 5-yo stepson gets to watch a fair amount of TV at his mom’s, it doesn’t even occur to him to even turn on the TV when he’s with us. It was hard at first giving up TV entirely (we do rent movies regularly, and have a fairly big collection of movies), and my stepson is allowed to watch videos occasionally, but now, I’m not sure how I managed to find time to watch TV! Cathy Weeks Before you buy.

Wow, this seems high to me. Where do you live? In the three years we have lived near San francisco, the cost of cable has gone form about $17 to $30 for extended basic service (about 30 channels). Some towns have been so upset about the increase that they are talking about not renewing the cable franchise and getting a different operator in. If it cost $53 for basic cable here, there would be a riot.

My k ids still only watch 1 hr in the afternoon, and are alllowed 1 hr queitly in their rooms at bedtime, on weekends we add 1 hr in the am as well.  DD usually chooses programs concerning dance, music, or the  arts, occasionally a figure skating performance or cmpetition.  DS watches a show on palentololgy and a history show every afternoon on Dsiscovery Kids.  On saturdays they are more likely to watch Popular Scicne for Kids, or a series on Space or Bil Nye than watch cartoons.  On Sundays we let DS watch for 2 hours of late becuse C-Span has been showing a series about the presidents, showing 1 each week, and the shows last for 2 hours. Without our cable we get 2/3 channels, depending on how weather affects our reception.  Without our cable we get none of the choices mentioned above. The cost for cable to just 1 tv is $53, for the extra $7 we have calbe in our room as well. There is no cost for the extra cable to the kids rooms since they don’t have the converter box or remote.  IMO it’s money well spent.  Without the cable we were spending a lot more than that renting tapes on Sat nights (now we have the movie channels) and buying/renting/checking tapes out of the library for our homeschool materials (and  our library charges a fee for video tapes).

We do ok with our cable.  Our system just got an improvment to digital service–so for $60 monthly we not get full service of 250 channels (including 2 disneys, 4 discovery channels, 5 sports channels,  A&E, AMC, TMC, TNT, TNN, 30 movie channels, and a whole slew more) on 2 tv’s plus all but the movie channels into the kids rooms ( the have tv acceptable video cards on their pc’s and we’ve had the cable feed run through the attic to their rooms.  NOne of the satellite systems I’ve looked into can give us that much for the same price. I second this suggestion. We have Dish TV for about the same price as cable. My kids watch Animal Planet, Nick, Pax, the game show network (the old Price is Rights from the 60s are really funny and give the kids a good sense of what the world was like when I was growing up. You know Josie, we’ve had the dish so long, I forget everybody else doesn’t have it.  Show’s how much I get out, huh?  Our little 5 yr old was given permission a few months ago to begin the Nick channel & Disney has some great movies that even I get caught up in with her. We love the animal channel also, & she used to get entranced watching the HGTV when they showed house renovations.  Her mom has her BFA in Interior Design, who knows maybe she’ll go on for archeticture.  And this year, she’s watched all the ice show or ice championship specials & would you believe she loves to watch ballroom dancing & the Torkelsons (sp?).  There are some really great educational shows on, she just says no blood Grammy (a live operation was too much). Hi Lisa, I’m not sure of the site, but if you find it, let me know.  I hate some of the junk on TV nowadays, and am very protective about what my son (soon 7) watches. Our favorite tv channel is PAX tv.  We especially enjoy "Touched by an Angel." I’ll let him watch certain shows, like "The Brady Bunch" etc., but as he gets older (and as his father lets him watch all kinds of garbage) that job will get more difficult. For instance, he’s discovered – ugh – wrestling!  Now, he can watch WCW (a little bit!), owned by Ted Turner (and has to keep fairly clean), but he cannot watch WWF, which is filled with heavy sexual innuendo.  Not appropriate for a kid his age, IMHO! A good way for us to help keep the airwaves clean is to get involved.  Don’t like a show?  Write down who the sponsors are, and send letters saying you are disappointed in them as a company for associating themselves with such a show, and give a specific example or two why that show is offensive.  Tell ‘em you won’t buy their product anymore, until they "clean up."  And you’ll tell your friends, too.  Be sure to send a letter to the local network affiliate, as well as the head honchos. One lil’ letter might not do it.  But organization, and communication, might help. Good luck!
