Question:
> Just like most other drugs, legal or illegal, marajuana affects > different people in different ways.
Lie number one. > Just like with alcohol, some > people are more prone by their physical body chemistry to abuse (not be > addicted to) it than others.
A popular lie used by alcoholics and their families to dismiss scrutiny into their family’s weird dynamics and their upbringing. Parents always wish to deflect blame, thus the "biology" myth about alcoholism. While a TINY correlation has been found it is like finding that 1% of cellphone users have car accidents from their use and then attributing all accidents to cellphones without there even being one in most cars!!!!! > Some people can smoke pot once/day and > still carry on perfectly normal lives.
Anybody can. > Others like how good they feel > so much that they won’t stop at just one joint and begin to abuse it.
Some people are so fucking starved by their parents for a good time that when they finally rebel and discover one they go quite crazy for a while, like the freshman of strict upbringings who stay up all night carousing and drop out of university first year!! You can go down the row of new freshmen and pick them out by their level of excitement first day. They are all the typical fatuous virgins who are easily titillated. > While most medical evidence proves that it is not physically addictive, > it can be mentally/emotionally addictive.
The definition of "mentally/emotionally/psychologically addictive" is what happens when you like something, like chewing gum, and decide to do it all the time for a while till you wear it out. > I only think that it would > lead to other drugs in the sense that if someone is already very > emotionally distraught or upset, and they start to feel good on pot, > they may decide that they could feel better on something stronger, and > so move on up to hard drugs.
The reasons for interest in sedative and stimulant drugs are both very different than that for pot. There is NO correlation between pot use and these drugs’ use except that when someone decides to try drugs at all in a society which lumps them together, they will likely run across the ones they like along with pot, and that’s about all. They are found together, like different buses at the terminal. > But there are many pot smokers out there > that have never and will never dare try hard drugs, and they have been > smoking pot for 15 years or more. So I believe that it depends on the > person and their situation – both physically and emotionally.
Most people have no interest in being sedated or in being so hyped that their jaw cramps up and they shake. > As one 15-year-old I saw in a teen rehab group (as he almost shouted at > a new guy who was there for the first time), when you get to the point > that you don’t feel "normal" unless you are high on pot,
The kids who are in "groups" for pot have been forced to be there, and they will recite anything or learn any liturgy to get done with it. Then they will go elsewhere and do what they want again. >(It > was a parent-teen group.) When he first showed up, as directed by the > court, he was not interested in the least in getting off the stuff, > saying that it wasn’t hurting his behavior/life. When he finally came > up clean on the twice-weekly drug tests a month later, he sang a > different tune.
He knew he had to deceive to get around these morons. The drug test had nothing to do with it other than indicate he was calculating his moves. > He was now preaching to the other newcomers about how > much more fun he was able to have when he was not stoned all of the > time (he likes to surf and evidentally, had a hard time doing that a > lot when he was stoned a lot!)
He was telling them what they wished to hear. Pot heads don’t wind up in Narcotics Anonymous as adults. Not unless court ordered, and then the other NA people make fun of them as fakers. Only kids get pushed into that stupid track, and it’s a waste of time. > While it may not be as habit-forming as cigarettes and alcohol, it can > be habit-forming for some.
In animal tests it was less habituating than most interesting things. > And it can cause the person to make just as > bad decisions as a drunk person can.
Nope. Alcohol really messes with inhibition. Pot enhances inhibition and complex thought. Pot heads overthink everything. > I do think for a person’s HEALTH, > that cigarettes are the worst of the 3 and wish that more people would > quit. But nicotine is SO addictive that many people have a very hard > time kicking the habit for good, even with all of the help there is out > there. (I believe it has been said that the only thing more addictive > than nicotine is heroin, and we all know how addictive it is!)
Actually nicotine is MORE addictive than heroin. > But as > for the damage the user can do to himself and those around him with > impaired decisions (driving, etc.), it ranks right there with alcohol > and its abuse. The big difference here in the US is that it’s legal to > drink too much, but not legal to smoke pot even a little. (I’m not > advocating the legalization of marajuana, nor am I advocating the > banning of alcohol. In fact, I do enjoy my wine.)
Alcohol is the second most additive drug next to nicotine and its withdrawal is MUCH harder and MUCH MORE dangerous than that of heroin. You cannot die from heroin withdrawal unless you are quite old and fragile. But even the youngest can die of alcohol/benzodiazepine(GABA receptor) withdrawal from hypertension and from convulsions, and the withdrawal is weeks to months of near insanity, whereas heroin/opiate/hydrocodone withdrawal is only a few days. > The biggest reason > that I wouldn’t want to legalize marajuana is because it would make it > that much harder to get teenagers into rehab programs for its abuse.
Nobody needs "programs" for pot. Don’t be a complete ass like this. > With it not legal, courts can step in and direct kids into rehab
There is NO withdrawal and no specific physical response to disuse. Rehab for pot is inane and idiotic. Only personality disorder cases even CLAIM to have trouble with pot, and they were insane before they met pot and will be insane decades after non-use. >(I > have seen this up close.)
Quit teasing, you haven’t seen doodley!! > And once they make it through high school > clean (which they might not have even made it through high school at > all otherwise!), and get on with bigger and better things in thier > adult lives, they don’t often go back to it again. > — > Cindy, Twins Mommy to Robert and Michael, 6/28/98
Kids can learn on pot and they even do well at math on it! Don’t be assinine. Actually physics labs are a favorite on pot!! They love graphing and make good intuited solutions to problems! Steve

Annemarie, I have to admire you.. You are the one person who is pursuing real and recent evidence on this and while I think that there will be problems as there are with most studies of this kind, it will be interesting to see what they say… And if this professor has his study up on the web, a URL to the actual text would be helpful too.. Lots snipped A really well thought out answer. You have done what I have refrained from doing though and given anecdotal evidence. I think I would be flamed
though I have similar stories. I repeated your above statement for the simple reason that only some people become addicted to alcohol as well. The majority of people can drink alcohol in a balanced and healthy way. It has even been proved that 1-2 glasses of red wine per day reduce risk of heart attack and other stress related illness’s. This is not saying that alcohol cannot be abused, I think we have all seen or know alcoholics, and we all know what drink driving does. I believe that some people as you said are at risk of being addicted to marijuana too. Just as only some people become addicted to alcohol. Perhaps it is an addictive personality, perhaps it is a brain chemical. I know that there has been research about addictive personalities, and a link to an inherited tendency towards addictions. Perhaps this is the case. I am looking forward to recieving the information in the post about the effect on the lungs now. I hope it is useful. It will certainly test how accurate our TV reporting is.

Well Todd, this thing is only about the effects on the lungs, but I am hoping to get some more info on mj soon to post as well as this when it arrives. A friend has been attending a course on helping children/ teenagers with learning difficulties. They were lectured on tuesday about the harmful effects of mj on the brain of a teenager, what bits are effected and why. They were not given the written evidence, so she promised she would go back and ask for it so that I can post it. So ok don’t flame me, I haven’t got the evidence yet so no I can’t prove it, I’m just letting you all know what I am up to. Apart from the damaging effect to the lungs, I agree mj is probably fairly harmless for adults. It will be interesting to see if this report, whatever that is being posted to me covers addiction. Just like most other drugs, legal or illegal, marajuana affects different people in different ways. Just like with alcohol, some people are more prone by their physical body chemistry to abuse (not be addicted to) it than others. Some people can smoke pot once/day and still carry on perfectly normal lives. Others like how good they feel so much that they won’t stop at just one joint and begin to abuse it. While most medical evidence proves that it is not physically addictive, it can be mentally/emotionally addictive. I only think that it would lead to other drugs in the sense that if someone is already very emotionally distraught or upset, and they start to feel good on pot, they may decide that they could feel better on something stronger, and so move on up to hard drugs. But there are many pot smokers out there that have never and will never dare try hard drugs, and they have been smoking pot for 15 years or more. So I believe that it depends on the person and their situation – both physically and emotionally. As one 15-year-old I saw in a teen rehab group (as he almost shouted at a new guy who was there for the first time), when you get to the point that you don’t feel "normal" unless you are high on pot, you’re "addicted". That’s where he was when he started the group. (It was a parent-teen group.) When he first showed up, as directed by the court, he was not interested in the least in getting off the stuff, saying that it wasn’t hurting his behavior/life. When he finally came up clean on the twice-weekly drug tests a month later, he sang a different tune. He was now preaching to the other newcomers about how much more fun he was able to have when he was not stoned all of the time (he likes to surf and evidentally, had a hard time doing that a lot when he was stoned a lot!) While it may not be as habit-forming as cigarettes and alcohol, it can be habit-forming for some. And it can cause the person to make just as bad decisions as a drunk person can. I do think for a person’s HEALTH, that cigarettes are the worst of the 3 and wish that more people would quit. But nicotine is SO addictive that many people have a very hard time kicking the habit for good, even with all of the help there is out there. (I believe it has been said that the only thing more addictive than nicotine is heroin, and we all know how addictive it is!) But as for the damage the user can do to himself and those around him with impaired decisions (driving, etc.), it ranks right there with alcohol and its abuse. The big difference here in the US is that it’s legal to drink too much, but not legal to smoke pot even a little. (I’m not advocating the legalization of marajuana, nor am I advocating the banning of alcohol. In fact, I do enjoy my wine.) The biggest reason that I wouldn’t want to legalize marajuana is because it would make it that much harder to get teenagers into rehab programs for its abuse. With it not legal, courts can step in and direct kids into rehab programs, and for many, it makes a major difference in their lives. (I have seen this up close.) And once they make it through high school clean (which they might not have even made it through high school at all otherwise!), and get on with bigger and better things in thier adult lives, they don’t often go back to it again. — Cindy, Twins Mommy to Robert and Michael, 6/28/98 Before you buy.

Actually, this is not correct. Because governments have put it in the same class as other, harder drugs and treat users of it in much the same manner, this sorta tosses all users of it into the same fray as rthe users of the harder drugs. For example, are you suggesting that the medical use of canibus will lead to the use of harder drugs where the medical use is allowed? Is this related to a teen child? It’s been my experience that marijuana is rather harmless.. while it does contain a lot of the damaging components that cigarettes do, it’t not physically addictive like cigarettes, or alcohol, and is more or less harmless.
