PLEASE KEEP POSTING THE INFO!!!! I really like having the research right in front of me without having to run my own searches. I appreciate the time and energy people like Colette, Carole and Naomi take to reasearch and inform us all. I do not want to have to use up more time looking up stuff in libraries and websites if someone else can let us know what is out there! Thank you all you researchers! Kathy. . . Congrats on 3 successful drug-free deliveries! My wife opted for the last-minute Demerol injection, as small as it was. I would never fault her for that, nor find fault with anyone with their decision, whatever route they take. With our second it didn’t help at all, she found, except for the placebo effect. This is a small Demerol injection given no later than 6 cm or so, early enough to wear off by the time delivery is nearing completion so we don’t deliver a drowsy baby. Regarding epidurals of any kind, the hospitals in our area (north of Toronto, Ontario) have been discouraging epidurals and drug-aided delivery of any kind. When I say this, I mean that the MILDLY discourage it, since (as you said at one point) there can be complications when you introduce ANY foreign substance into the body. If requested, the patient is in charge regarding the choice of epidural, injected painkillers, etc. However, at the hospital we delivered both our kids at they went from a nearly 80-percent epidural rate to about 5-percent in a year. We were told epidurals are quite safe, but there are risks, including permanent paralysis. The injection site is on the spinal cord, so a slip can mean permanent damage. There’s also temporary paralysis, which a good friend of mine went through. She became terrified and found it hard to believe the doctors when they told her it was LIKELY temporary. Fortunately it was. I think it’s appalling and even negligent that the hospital would not pass on warnings of side-effects. You can bet it’s in the fine print on the release you sign before they ever start the epidural drip! Good Luck with the Parenting thing. . . hello all. I was appalled by my hospitals use of the interfecal. No I am not againest using drugs during labor if needed. While I was taking a pregnancy class at the hospital the RN was going over the basic Lamaze breathing. When she got to active labor she said " most people don’t use this anymore since EVERYONE is getting the interfecal". Then these soon to be moms got into the discussion of how to get it. They have you come to the hospital watch a video and sign up ahead of time!!! I have had three kids. The first labor was 9 hours. I got to the hospital at 6cm and had the baby in an hour and one half. The second child took 7. Got to the hospital at 3cm. Went from 3cm to baby in 40 minutes!! When I was taking my hospital "tour" for the third child I told her (nurse) I was not interested in the video or the new drug. She told me that in "her experiance as a labor and delivery nurse" for a third labor to go 12 to 14 hours. I said that doesn’t sound that bad. She then told me that was 12 to 14 hours of hard labor!!!  I also didn’t like how she said it had no side-effects. Maybe they are rare, but doesn’t everthing you inject into your system have risks??? I have since heard of a woman who had hers put in at 9cm. Not sure why maybe someone here would know?  I also met a woman who’s last labor was a total of 45 minutes. She told them as soon as she was dialated enough she wanted it!! Kathy
