When a kid says fuck off?

Question:

: : >If spanking is out, what are some other idea’s for punishment : >for abusive behavior by kids? : : I’m assuming by ‘abusive’ you mean verbal messages such as the : one in the header.  Since kids say ‘fuck off’ to their parents : in dozens of different ways from about 6 months to 80 years, : I’ll tell you how I handle it, no matter what the language is. : : I say, "Hey, liking me isn’t a requirement for this relationship. : Write me off as the bitchmom, you can brag about what a pain in : the rear I am to all of your friends.  Meantime, the answer is : STILL ‘not a chance’, and you are grounded until further notice : for using your voice as a weapon." I prefer the compassionate approach taken by Deb and others in this group. Love and acceptance always outperforms adversarial parenting, in my opinion.

And at what point does the child receive the message that not every behavior they choose to display is ultimately acceptable? The "compassionate approach" sounds like a codeword for good, old-fashioned denial to me.
