Question:
There are thousands of places to buy from and a lot of people who post in this newsgroup are in the water gardening business. That’s why it’s not a good idea to post a URL to your business or your favorite business every time someone ask where do I buy _____. There is a FAQ maintained by K30a at http://hometown.aol.com/k30a/myhomepage/writing.html When people ask where to buy pond supplies it only takes one reply with the FAQ URL to answer their question. And it gives everyone an equal shot at getting business. K30a would probably add your business to those in the FAQ at the next update if you asked? But don’t post ads or buy here URLs in the newsgroup, it’s really cheap and tacky. Peace Dave — -/- http://www.dragonkoi.com http://www.ehap.org

Dave, While I concur with your desire to keep this group non-commercial (I hate the ads myself), I think most people post to this group wanting a personal answer to their question and not a FAQ referral. Otherwise, the newsgroup would not be necessary. To make a recommendation and include a URL so the product is easy to find, is more in keeping with the philosophy of this group than going through the back door by sending email replies. Such advice is in front of the group and subject to the group’s scrutiny. If I make a recommendation and someone in the group has had a problem with that product, I want to know about it. The truth is, my sales related to these posts are miniscule, so I am sure no one feels compelled to buy from Ponds2go because they were referred from here. I am very interested in hearing how the rest of the group feels about this issue. Mike G. www.ponds2go.com

The group doesn’t exist to scrutinize general prices and business practices. Even minuscule sales obtained by using rec.ponds as a direct sales medium isn’t fair to the businesses that are here but do not take advantage of the group as a sales tool. Thank you Dave, that was very interesting reading and a lot of good advice. I’m afraid I couldn’t find the section you are referring to. But in the acknowledgement of the following I am through with this discussion. "But Netiquette does forbid the perpetuation of flame wars — series of angry letters, most of them from two or three people directed toward each other, that can dominate the tone and destroy the camaraderie of a discussion group. It’s unfair to the other members of the group. And while flame wars can initially be amusing, they get boring very quickly to people who aren’t involved in them. They’re an unfair monopolization of bandwidth." from the book Netiquette by Virginia Shea. Peace, Mike G. www.ponds2go.com

BRAVO! Lets end this discussion, you must all realize that not every one is going to agree all the time, so if you don’t like a post, that is what the delete key is for. I for one, like to read both sides of peoples opinions, and make my own choice. I will take any and all info that I can get, use what I need, and forget the rest……Bev

Neither should K30 feel the responsibility to do the above, nor should Dave try to play moderator. ;o) I guess put me on the cheap and tacky list. I list off the ones I’ve use that don’t post here, with the hope others will list their favorites and the vendors who do post here on a regular basis should feel free to post their URLs. Full blown spam (without warning) is perhaps another thing, but not enough to yank my chain, and sometimes those create some good debates. ;o) ~ jan

If I can’t play moderator why do you get to do what you want

Dave wrote ~~If I can’t play moderator why do you get to do what you want
~~ Also is why I call them the informal faqs – no responsibility (have way too much of that with this parenting business!). Still the offer stands. If you send me a link, vendor persons or ‘regular’ persons and the page is on the up and up (no sneaking in, ahem, colourful pages…) I’ll stick them in the informal faq after I am all done with this Destination Imagination stuff – which takes up my time from November to May. Also will take suggestions for the green water statement and the heron statement. k30 and the water gardening labradors see the labradors at http://www.daydreamergardens.com/2_level/articles/dog_how_to.htm REC.PONDS INFORMAL FAQ PAGE http://hometown.aol.com/k30a/myhomepage/writing.html
