This is disgusting.  The money received for foster children is supposed to be for the CHILDREN.  People that take foster kids in for the money make me SICK.  I can’t believe anyone would suggest such a thing. Stacey

I started doing word processing at home on my computer for a friend of my husband.  It has worked out very well with just one "client", since he happens to need quite a bit of work done.  If his work load slacks off, I have considered putting an ad in the paper or posting on the nearby colleges’ bulletin board. It is convenient for me, since I can do the typing in the evenings when the kids are in bed, or during the day when the 2 oldest are in bed and Katie takes her nap. One disadvantage about working at home is the temptation to put off work until everything else (housework and such) is done.  After all there’s no boss breathing over your shoulder to see what you are doing every minute of the day.  If I have a deadline, it comes first.  Luckily, my husband is cooperative in this situation  :) On the other hand, I can also throw a load of laundry in the washer, type until it is done, throw it in the dryer, type until it is dried,m stop and play with the kids for a few minutes, etc.  What was the last job you ever had that allowed you to do this?? Good Luck finding your at home occupation!!! Kathleen

If you have the background and computer equipment, you could write freelance articles. I’ve done this for seven months with success. However, I also have my daughter at day care part-time, so there’s a cost involved. Writing takes enough concentration that I can’t do it with my daughter at home. Anyway, good luck! Stacy, I see the point you are trying to make but I think you overreacted.  Grandma offered a solution to the problem but are you offering one?  She also mentioned other benefits besides earning extra income such as companionship for the child.  I don’t see anything wrong with trying to earn a bit of income.  If one were not good with kids, were not skilled at parenting, yes, I would see something wrong with that.  But that doesn’t appear to be the case here.   Perhaps in your mind you were trying to be  "politically correct" but overreacting to what you perceive to be politically incorrect defeats the purpose of communication and an exchange of ideas.

You suggested trying to be a foster parent.  Well, from a foster parent that is trying to adopt the child I am telling you that FIRST, that isn’t a part time job, it’s more work than giving birth to a child!  These children NEED LOTS OF TIME, LOVE, & ATTENTION!  Not to mention all the fighting with the system to try to get any services for them.  And, SECOND, trust me when I say that you don’t make money this way.  We put out FAR MORE for our daughter than the check the go on and on, but I think you get the picture! Hi…I, too, wanted to stay home with my kids.  Or at the time with my baby.  I decided to watch other people’s kids.  At first I watched 3 year olds while my baby was 4 mos old.  That was a lot of work.  I then switched to watching school aged kids.  They would come in the morning, I would make them breakfast and take them to school.  I had the whole day with my baby.  Then I would pick the kids up after school and give them a snack.  They would play amoungst themselves until their parents came to pick them up. Just a couple hours before school and a couple after school and the whole day was with MY baby.  I had a total of 8 kids, and I made $1200.00.  I was a on a food program thru the state.  They paid for all the food.  By the way, I was licensed to run a daycare…but you can get away with watching kids without a license. Post your name and number at the nearest Elementary school…you will get lots of responses. If you want to talk about this more with me, I don;t mind helping you. I think it is great you are wanting to stay home with your kid(s).   Look forward to hearing from you!  Jennifer

I know someone who sells stuff by mail order from home. I don’t know if he makes much. He gets by on that, plus veterans benefits. I am planning on writing articles at home. I don’t know if that would earn me much either. Just some ideas —Linda
